Actually, not quite right. The Taliban refused to give him up directly to the USA. They were willing to capture him and turn him over to either Turkey or Kazakhstan at the behest of the USA, and neither of those two countries were unhappy about then turning over bin Laden to the US authorities (albeit possibly after significant torture, but given what the US later did to innocent Afghans, they wouldn't have been worried about this).

Even the invasion of Afghanistan had little to do with bringing a mass-murdering criminal to justice, and more to do with a limp dicked warmonger power trip (you can make your own mind up about who in the Shrub junta had the limp dick, my money is on all of them).

The war in afghanistan was administratively abandoned before it had begun. Sure, they were warmongers - it's hard to see any us president of the past two decades any other way, but they we're looking for a different war....and got one.

Cheney was never quiet about his intentions for iran..and bush the younger had a score to settle.. also equally public. Looking back, had 9/11 not happened...it would have been iran and iraq. The inconvenience (both practically and politically) of opening a third war saved our bacon.

I'm suspicious that the Saudis are guilty of a lot of things the US overlooks. I've always hoped to see an end to our "special relationship" along with Israel, too. Another great reason to stop burning oil. We don't rely on them as much now but who knows how long it will last. That entire region is an abomination.

I don't think there's anything to Afghan conspiracies, though. We went in there for one reason only, but staying for 20 years made little sense. Maybe if we'd never helped them out with the Ruskies, we might never have had to go after Bin Laden. Again, the middle east is a cesspool. If only we had listened to Eisenhower.

Things are already damning enough as they stand, really, without the need of additional filler. Afghanistan was an inconvenience to an administration who's attention lay elsewhere, and it showed...and here we are today.

Of all the things I did think about on 9/11....the way things turned out wasn't among them.
