Just the essentials or all the bells and whistles?

RE: Just the essentials or all the bells and whistles?
There needs to be a distinction made between high quality products and products that have a lot of features. You can buy a cheap standard miter saw at Lowes or a really well built one for 3X the price. You can also buy either miter saw as a sliding, dual-action, compound unit with a laser guide, dust collector, clamps and a chewing gum dispenser. So, cheap and simple or cheap and complex; or high quality simple or high quality complex are all options. I sprung for the extra features and boy am I glad I did. It makes the miter saw a badass tool.
Why is it so?

I bought a 10" compound miter saw. I can't cut a 2 X 6 all the way, I have to flip it over to finish the cut. Should have bought the 12" slider. Live and learn. I have 3 circular saws, though, so it's kind of moot.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.

That's exactly why I wanted the slider.  When cutting angles the problem is more pronounced.  If I'm cutting anything wider than a 2 X 4 at an angle, I really need the slider.  You don't want to cut an angle by flipping it over; too difficult to get it straight.  And the blade size is not that important until you get to really thick lumber.  A slider actually compensates for a smaller blade.  So a 10" slide does more than a 12" standard.

Does a 12 inch slider make chairs exist? Hilarious

There is a control setup button.that allows you to mute the sound....

I found the setup menu (hold this button down for 5 seconds, toggle the other button and so on), but it defaults back to obnoxious when the power blips, which is too often on a coop.  I took the beeper out of my truck.  I might do the same with the microwave.

I had a Dewalt cordless drill just die on me - probably it was some "feature" like a "replace the damn brushes" sensor.  After tinkering with it and not being able to revive it, I just switched to my corded drill.

Recently I took my Makita jigsaw for service.  It cost a bit, but cheaper than buying another one, and now it purrs happily along once more.

I do so little DIY with tools that I buy cheap tools because I'll only use them a time or two. My magnetic screwdrivers for working on computers is another matter.

The difference between "good enough" and "nothing but the best" for me is about pride of ownership and enjoyment.

If it is something I enjoy, I want the best. If it is something I just need for living, I don't care if it is the cheapest available.

I put value in my hobbies, particularly astronomy, and I can now afford the best, so I am buying it. The enjoyment I get from that is immense. But I'll happily wear cheap clothes - I just don't take pride in fashion.
