What happens at an atheist church?
https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-21319945

People sometimes get together but that does not mean that they are in some religion. People gather in stadiums to cheer for same team but it's not a religion, or gather in the chess club to play chess.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Just because a looney group calls itself an Atheist Church in no way makes Atheism a religion that's simply an irrational conclusion.

Quote:No. I am suggesting that Helios presented an opinion on a complex topic as if it were a settled fact.
Nah what I presented was a fact to a total noncomplex topic that simply makes you mad  Hehe

Quote: At the same time, I am also noting that as a general rule the evidence offered by a theist will not meet the evidentiary standard for an atheist.
Nah what your doing is offering excuses because my statement is true and it makes you mad  Hehe

Quote:Again, this is a difference of opinion, not a character flaw or lack of intelligence on anyone's part.
No it's not it's a matter of facts vs your hurt feelings

Why don't you define what you mean by 'soul' after all you are the one asking the question, maybe then people will be willing to answer your questions? There are a few definitions of soul, which one do you want to discuss ? What you seem to be doing is asking the equivalent of something like ''what do you feel about the colour of paint''.

Take some responsibility for your beliefs and use definitions we can ask you about.

You know, i realize that you don’t want to be called a religion especially by a random guy on the internet but when BBC calls you a church … that’s a whole different level. 😂

If you’re confused about “soul” a question asked by a theist on an atheist site, then tell me about the afterlife. Surely you’re not confused about that one?

A different level of misunderstanding? Yes, it is.

I am still waiting for someone to explain, coherently, and I'll add the BBC to my list, how not being convinced that gods exist can be a religion?

There is no dogma, doctrine, holy texts, edicts that are connected to atheism.

Anything else you seem to want to glom onto not being convinced gods exist, have nothing to do with atheism.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Sure. Basically the word that binds you all together is the word “atheism”. In this group there are many interpretations of what that means and you also classify yourselves into different categories like Agnostic Atheists, Atheists or Materialistic Atheists.
These traits are similar to a religion with different denominations.

RE: The Sects of Atheism
It has been amusing watching the car wreck that is Gary in slow motion.

If Gary has achieved anything, it is to increase my cynicism about religion. Religion has so messed up his brain that he is incapable of escaping the programming.

Of note is the fact that he has never identified which sect he belongs to, or what it believes, or he believes, or anything much really.

260+ posts in and he has told nobody nothing beyond the fact that he believes in some magic sky fairy and that's it. Nothing more.

I suspect that he knows that were he to reveal that, he would get the snot beaten out of him. For all any of us know, he might be a member of the Westboro church. Even if not, he would defend them as god fearing and righteous.

Strange, seems to me that people have been pretty consistent in telling you that atheism means just the one thing, about just one thing....but you walk away with some other impression?

I doubt it.  I'm pretty sure you walked in with a particular set of impressions and are having trouble flogging them.

Sure, agnostic atheists and so-called hard atheists are different. They answer a question about the status of their belief in god the same way, but answer any number of other questions differently, just like blonde people might. Why does this give you so much trouble? It's the fabric of your everyday life, you know that people who agree on one item, or are like each other in one respect, often don't or aren't on another..you know it from your own experience.

The reason that none of them are religions, or religious denominations, is that none of them are religious claims. If you knew that someone was an agnostic atheist or a gnostic atheist..you still wouldn't know what they thought about the sacred, the set apart and the forbidden, or if they belonged to any community which shared those apprehensions about those other things.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
