Welcome! I was raised Pentecostal and really, really believed. I didn't go straight to atheist, but after I gave up on the Bible being inspired by God, I still had anxiety over my previous beliefs similar to what you describe. It diminished over time and now it really never occurs to me. I had open heart surgery 20 years ago and God never crossed my mind until the hospital chaplain came around afterwards to check on me and see if I needed any prayin'. I had been an outright agnostic atheist around five years at that point.

So just to make things short. Grew up catholic. converted atheist in middle school. went back to christianity at 18. now an atheist at 22. I made some promises to god while I was a believer and im afraid even though I do not believe a god exists im afraid he is going to do something about these promises and guide me in this direction regardless and its giving me a ton of anxiety. could anyone help further re instate the lack of existence of the Old Testament deity.

Terrible people exist. They're real. I wouldn't waste any time comforting myself with the fiction that any person is so bad they can't exist - I'd lean into the fact that I don't give a shit how real terrible people are.

Their realness doesn't commit to them, and so too...a gods realness wouldn't commit me to a god's terribleness.

There's this wonderful little scene in last samurai (of all things), wherein billy connelly talks about an assault he was planned to be part of, but..he retorts. "what's this we business...it's walking papers for me".

That's sort of the point. Assume Steve is real. Do you do what Steve says because he says it...? When is that ever actually true in your life?

If you thought about it, you'd realize that there are all sorts of horrible shitbags who absolutely do exist and that has absolutely no power to make you do what they want you to. It never did...not even when you were a believer.
