Can Japan Ever Truly Pay for it' s Sins?

That's pretty impressive, on a personal level.  Yamamoto is a personal hero of mine.  He knew what had to be done, doubted that it could be achieved, but gave it his level best when pursuing that goal.

It was a P-38, not P-51.   It is unlikely he died clutching his samurai sword, because the mortal bullet wound was of a devastating nature that precludes a his holding a lifelike composure through the moment of death.   The search party that found his body likely posed it for appearance sake.

He didn’t think the attack on Pearl Harbor was a terrible idea, because it was largely his brain child and he pushed hard for it at the expense of long established Japanese war plans in place for 20 years.  What he thought was a bad idea was to go to war with the US at all.

Also, in our own self important way we think attack on the Pearl Harbor, which is against the good old US of A, must have been the central military stroke of any enemy, because we are so important.    But that is not the case.   The attack on Pearl Harbor was actually support operation to facilitate the main Japanese military thrust into Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Singapore, Dutch East Indies, and Phillipines.      That main thrust was japan’s ultimate strategic aim for the war.     The attack on Pearl Harbor merely protected the flank of the main thrust.

There was a birthday thread for you. When you didn't respond we assumed the worst, that the bodies you needed to bury were difficult to manage on your own, and you had to spend your entire birthday just to complete the task.

Glad to hear that's not the case.

I'm willing to give it to the man.  If he were posed, he was posed exactly as he would have wished to be posed - which is high honor from opposition forces.  We shot bin laden in the head and dumped his body overboard and made that public - for counter-example.

I do, though, like you, doubt the accounts of his discovery on a strictly factual basis.

I think we're splitting hairs over whether he thought it was a bad idea.  A man who thinks it's a bad idea to go war with a people can't assess any plan to go to war with those same people as anything more, less, or other than the least ludicrous idea in the bunch.
