teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Nemo sicut deus debet esse! “No matter what men think, abortion is a fact of life. Women have always had them; they always have and they always will. Are they going to have good ones or bad ones? Will the good ones be reserved for the rich, while the poor women go to quacks?” –SHIRLEY CHISHOLM RE: Atheist or Skeptical videos

There's this new video about abortion, but what is particularly interesting about it is that through a series of montages it is basically the anatomy of the religious mind and the bullshit in its core. How it clashes with itself. First, they say how life begins with conception and they even count every fertilized egg as a human being, how every zygote counts even if it was conceived by rape or incest, and how they will help women who want to abort for the reasons of poverty... And then we see very poor women who can not afford the kids they gave birth to and the Christian leaders cursing the very idea of welfare to these women, even protesting when the food is given to the immigrant babies at the border, and how they don't want to do anything to prevent the school shootings.
And it all comes from the religious mind not being driven by rationalism but by emotions and delusion.

Yeah, that's kinda how AF athiests breakdown...those still learning and those who just want to debate. Then again, I like the serious threads but also enjoy a little verbal jousting just for fun.

My deconversion process (apologies, I know some people don't like the term, but I think it fits me) has opened up a huge new world to me of information and resources that I am spending far too many hours (well, maybe not) every day sponging up - funny how you only see the things you want to see, or more specifically that others want you to see, before you venture outside the bubble. Some of my favorite long-form ones this week are "Religulous" by Bill Maher (available for rental various places) and "Letting Go of God" by Julia Sweeney, which I'll link below. Also, pretty much anything on Youtube by Bart Ehrman.

I am more familiar with Fellowship of Freethought as I have attended some of their events over the past few years. Aron Ra is a member there and often a speaker. Really nice guy...not nearly as scary as he looks. While speaking with him on one occassion, he told me that he used to live in the town where I live. Now he's a couple towns west. |
