I haven't had cable TV in years. I stream old movies from Criterion Channel and buy DVDs of classic movies that I like. I also stream Acorn, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and HBO Max for some things from time to time. Works for me. I can't abide commercials.

I saw recently a video of Leslie Nielsen saying similar stuff about TV that I was saying, and that is how TV shows were easier to follow (dumber) and how viewers had a different approach to watching TV.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
