many other conjectures that subsequently gained credibility didn’t have any evidence in the beginning either.  in this the string theory is not unique or unusual.

the difference between string theory and god is most of those who worked on the string theory do actually care what kind evidence should be there if their notion of strings are true, and they do think the inability to obtain such evidence should actually signify.

so the decades during which string theory dominated theoretical physics research, the question is a matter of whether a worthy thing was under done, over done, or done by the right amount at the right time to advance the state of theoretical physics.   The centuries during which god dominated perception on the other hand, there was only total disregard for the significance of evidence and embracing of any crockery that promise to gain god counterfeit respectability.
