You are not in a public place setting something on fire with the specific purpose of being a xenophobic dick.

Ok, I set up a big screen and screen share me deleting a folder with 100,000 Quran pdfs.

What about then?

So then it isn't about destroying the book.

I downloaded a digital copy of the Quran(pdf), made roughly a hundred copies in the same folder then deleted the folder on my PC.

Am I now equivalent to the nazis? What If instead made 1,000 copies or 10,000? If not why not?
Deleting a digital copy of the Quran is not the same as burning a physical one in public as an act of protest.

I disagree. I don’t see how a physical copy of a book is different from a physical copy. Thanks for that example Nay Sayer.

And please read my “The issue of Idolatry in Abrahamic Religions” in this part of the forum on that issue.

Again from a spiritual perspective this attitude is nothing. I am someone who uses scriptures (religious texts) for my own personal spiritual growth.

The issue here is merely symbolic. That Guy is saying “I hate you so I will destroy something that means something to you”.

It’s a cultural issue and it hits exactly in the right spot. Let me explain:

Culturally, some Muslims hang their holy book on the wall rather than to place it on a bookshelf. There are also non-verified accounts of early converts to İslam not even daring to move because “the book of God has been hanged on the wall of the house”. In the old days it was believed that no one should even touch the holy book before doing some ritual cleaning. There used to be this body of unfounded beliefs on the holiness of the object itself.

Today (I mean since at least 20 years), we don’t really care that much about these issues. Still what this guy is going (unlike the blasphemy issue of Charlie Hebdo for instance) is to determine some culturally sensitive areas and then to use them to psychologically attack an entire group of people. I don’t think he would bother if all of them were like me, but that’s the point. He is hitting deep into the cultural identity of the Muslim community and is therefore getting some reaction.

And I have nothing to say to people like that. I only expect the rest of the population (of entire Western Europe) to be smarter on issues like this. That all Smile

The trident looks like the grain Head on the Ukrainian flag. It matters to me because there are political islamists in my country saying all sorts of nonsense about Russia’s “Special Military Operation” in Ukraine. And I am deeply bothered by this being the descendent of people who literally gave everything they had to create this Turkish Republic out of a land that was destined to disappear completely had it not been for the decisiveness of its people + the vision of a few very intelligent men who had decided to believe that a different future was possible for the people of this country.

2) The Trident symbolizes Poseidon. People should respect the sea. That’s how I see it Smile

So then it isn't about destroying the book.

Again spiritual perspective:

The only issue with the book is how much of it you are able to understand from that book. And that works for all religious scriptures. And there are stories in which the message is: “You can cast aside all religious practices if you want to, for only God knows who is able to understand spiritual realities and who is not”.

So this is just another act of provocation.

Another spiritual perspective:

This is the human ego to it’s extreme. In a country like Sweden you can really blame the lack of education or the dysfunctional family of this guy. This is just the limited sense of self. The failure of an individual to connect with something that is present in all human beings. Instead of being connected to our common denominator (B), he is connected to a fear-based sense of identity (A). And the issue of all true religion is to try to move from A to B.

This guy is very close to (A) but he has (as a human being) the ability to wake up to what he really is (See “American History X” – 1998). And that’s why we as spiritual people tend to focus on that rather to attack this guy.

Still: I am a believer in some legal consequences to actions like that in countries with important Muslim minorities Smile

Why stop at Muslim books? Maybe we should have legal consequences for burning Dr. Seuss books in countries with important toddler minorities. We could fine or jail people for setting light to ‘Huckleberry Finn’ in countries with an important minority of people who live near rivers. Bastinado would be fitting for burning dictionaries in countries with an important minority of people who use words.

Any other forms of free expression you’d like to jump up and down on?

Once they take that freedom from him, what's to keep them from taking it from you?
