They already are. Find me a single parent that will wait while their kid threatens to piss their pants in public for an open stall in the "proper" restroom. Such a giant nothingburger. Find just one parent who would prefer that their daughter squat and shit in the middle of the checkout floor than use a restroom clearly marked...for boys. You show me that, I'll show you somebody that needs CPS in their life.
Ghouls, groomers, and categorically unfit parents. It seems that christian dominionism is calcifying around people like this as their core constituency.

I’ve used unisex bathrooms in three countries. Sexual assault was conspicuous by its absence.

I don't. I only care that people like you are being assholes. People shouldn't be assholes to each other for the sake of being assholes to each other. If we can't agree on this, I doubt we'll agree to anything else.

Slightly off topic, why do Americans call it a "restroom" it's the last place I would want to take a rest! (much prefer a comfortable seat for resting)

Probably related more to the term reststop.
And growing up, my teachers at least, preferred we use restroom, because it seemed less obscene, somehow, than toilet and more sophisticated than bathroom.
