As an aside.  Reading lips isn't the most important aspect.  Facial expressions are crucial to sign language.

That's only if you know sign language, which is why most deaf people rely on reading lips in order to understand what hearing people are stating.

Also, do you think everyone's going to wear a mask with a clear view of their mouth just in case they encounter a deaf person?

I don't.  The Deaf are mostly unseen by the hearing public.  As it has always been.

That's why there is a Deaf Culture.  Being with people who can, and will, communicate with you in your language is important.

Even the best lip readers only catch about 30% of the words said.  Facial expression and body language adds to the context and thereby leads to a certain level of understanding.

I decided to learn NZSL after being in a queue at a local dairy. The customer at the counter was obviously deaf, wanted some things behind the counter and had a painful time making himself understood. I felt wretched that I couldn’t help him.

I knew a non-deaf guy who could read the orders that people were giving to the waitress from 15 metres away.
He was so reliable that we would start the orders before she came and told us.

To be fair though, he only has to decipher which words are being said from the menu.

It makes some sense with such a limited number of words.

Lip reading is complicated by many things.  Different accents and unfamiliar regional word usage can make it difficult.  And the sight line needs to be clear.  If the view of the mouth is obscured by things like a drink or simply turning the head for a moment the ability to effectively lip read is diminished.

Sign language is definitely one of the next skills I want to put in my toolkit.
We have a few deaf and blind clients at my work so I'd like to learn the hand to hand sign language as well.
