You know what would be cool as fuck? If Stephen Colbert spent his summer vacation guest hosting for Jimmy Kimmel.

Quote:We increasingly view ourselves as surrounded by enemies and deceivers, lost in a media landscape that constantly tells us no one can be trusted. A report published in February by Johns Hopkins Stavros Niarchos Foundation-SNF Agora Institute found that nearly 60 percent of seniors and 47 percent of millennial and Gen Z voters believed “those who really ‘run’ the country are not known to the voters.” Nearly half of Americans over 30 think “much of our lives are being controlled by plots hatched in secret places.”

When people start to turn random words into acronyms and I have to do a search that yields multiple results. Case in point, hg. In the context of what I've seen, I'm guessing it refers to home girl.

Quote:Motorola has effectively bricked its WiFi routers without warning, and the issue has been ongoing for nearly a month, according to a Mashable investigation and user complaints across the App Store, Amazon, and Reddit.
Sometime around mid-May, Motorola's MotoSync+ app for iOS and Android went down. On iOS, the MotoSync+ app opens to the login screen, and a loading wheel just spins and spins. On Android, the app also loads to the login screen but displays a "Server License Expired" message.
Because the Motorola MotoSync+ app is required to set up all new compatible WiFi routers released by Motorola, many users have been completely blocked from using their routers.
Some Motorola customers may also be completely unaware of the issue, as existing router setups may continue to work — for now. However, if that user ever needs to factory reset their router, which Motorola recommends when experiencing certain problems, they must use the app to do so, according to Motorola's support documentation. Likewise, users with new Motorola routers can only add devices, change settings, or perform troubleshooting within the MotoSync+ app.
Mashable reached out to Motorola repeatedly for this story, but the company hasn't provided any explanation for the problems.

Quote:An ancient Greek concept, sophrosyne – pronounced “suh-fros-uh-nee” – is what we might call “sound-mindedness” today. It’s a constellation of characteristics, including moderation, reflectiveness and self-knowledge. They’re found in the kind of person who can respect and trust herself, and be respected and trusted by others.
As a philosopher and philosophical counselor, I research the connection between virtue and happiness. In particular, I’ve noticed a connection between sophrosyne and eudaimonia, the Greek philosophical concept for happiness, or living well.
Harmony of the soul
For the Greeks, sophrosyne represented excellence of character, moderation and self-control. It was connected to phronesis, or practical wisdom, and stood in marked contrast with hubris: excessive pride, dangerous overconfidence and lack of self-insight. Heraclitus, a philosopher who lived around 500 B.C.E., taught that sophrosyne was the most important virtue of all.
Plato, who taught a century later, discussed sophrosyne as the ability to know oneself – and to know when you don’t know something. In “Republic,” he likened sophrosyne to a harmony or friendship between the three parts of the soul: reason, spirit and bodily desires.
Plato’s student Aristotle argued that sophrosyne allows people to strike a balance between self-indulgence and self-denial – like someone who tries to get the right amount of physical exercise, neither too much nor too little. Aristotle taught that it was a virtue developed through practice, just like training for a sport or learning to play a musical instrument.
Sound-mindedness, in short, is not inborn but must be learned.

I continue to be annoyed by the number of people who don’t know the difference between a walking stick and a walking cane.

Perhaps some of the most debilitating societal tropes are that sound-mindedness as in smarts, are inborn and immutable, as well as the conflation of ignorance and intelligence. There might be other tropes that are more debilitating, such as that merit leads to success, but these tropes disincentive one to take steps to improve and encourage the belief that no infirmity exists.
