a good reason might be the natural adult sex ratio is close to 1:1, there is widely, and reasonably, perceived social stability danger when the society find itself with a large pool of young heterosexual males without prospect of mates. so it adequately rewards the society to find strictures that allocate available marriageable partners on a close to a 1:1 basis.

That seems an overly draconian way to manage such a problem, should such a problem even be an actual problem.

Gay marriage is allowed. Multiple cohabitation is allowed. Why not polygamy?

That’s only a partial answer. It seems that if all forms of polyamory were allowed under law, the imbalance would cancel itself out.

It’s also a somewhat patriarchal view, as it doesn’t address polyandry.
