As I understand it there are billions of people who claim to be Christians. As a 2.5nd Stage Lensman I find their claims odd.

Possibly, but I still think that she's flip flopping for the backing of the christian believers and their position of hating Islam. Don't have the power or control to change from within then switch teams, Islam-Atheist-Christian.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.
It probably helps to remember that the largest christian demo here is cultural or nominal. Christian only in name. So, if Hirsi is a nominal christian, a person who believes in cultural or political christianism..but not necessarily christ or the miracles or the magic book or whatever - then that would make her completely unremarkable as a christian. It's also pretty common for people who leave their religions in disgust to flirt with atheism for awhile before finding some other similar religion they believe lacks all the nasty shit of the one they left.
She may be in the latter set, but all she wrote about was the first.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!
I usually couldn't care less, if it is reported that 'famous atheist X' is now a theist.
The only way I'd take notice, is if they were able to back up their theism with demonstrable and falsifiable evidence, and valid and sound logic. The fact that 'famous atheist X' has fallen for the same flawed reasoning that billions of other people have fallen for, is hardly surprising. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
Someone I don't know and don't give a shit about claims now to be something I don't give a shit about.
Guess my opinion. Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? WHERE???"
As a headline from the absurd it's great.
East african islamist becomes american christian nationalist after a brief stint of doubt about the existence of god.
