Sad to say, you're probably right. According to the standards by which the world judges, assholes win, and heroes use violence.

It's just necessary. Mundane, ordinary people typically don't consider violence a viable option when dealing with problems, and even when they do use violence, they will typically feel remorseful about it. Well, a hero says, "fuck feeling bad, I need to do the right thing anyway", so when he or she does use violence, they will feel justified in their actions, as they should.

Here's a useful article, which arrived at two key findings: "That nonviolent protests are effective at mobilizing sympathizers to support the cause, whereas more disruptive protests can motivate support for policy change among resistant individuals."

We all benefit as a group from someone doing something about climate change, but individually we are better off if that someone isn't us. The solution is usually to change the payoffs and incentives. For example, if there's a law that fines me for doing some activity that harms the environment, then I'm better off switching to an activity that doesn't harm the environment.

I think that's a huge part of the issue. The fossil fuel industry, for example, has put alot of money into making people think that doing anything for the environment would impoverish us..when, in reality, it would impoverish them.

They aren't lobbying on our behalf, out of the goodness of their hearts.
