Star Trek Quietly Broke Gene Roddenberry’s Most Sacred Rule

There is one moment in the Strange New Worlds Season 3 premiere that breaks one of Gene Roddenberry's rules for Star Trek. Captain Pike prays.

In the final moments of the episode, Pike visits the woman he loves, recently implanted with a fatal Gorn egg. He then kneels to recite The Lord's Prayer. Diehard fans of Star Trek know series creator Gene Roddenberry was a secular humanist who firmly believed religion would not survive into humanity's future. Yet the canon itself does not rigidly adhere to that view.

When creating Star Trek in the 1960s, Roddenberry imagined a future where humanity evolved into its best possible selves. Nationalism, poverty, bigotry, and dogmatic religion were all shameful relics of the past. One of his most controversial Star Trek ideas came in "Who Mourns for Adonais?" when Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew encounter a powerful alien who claims to be Apollo.

The episode is the first of many stories in this universe that pose that "gods" are just alien beings so advanced they seem like magic. However, in that same episode, Kirk tells Apollo that "mankind has no need for gods," but adds, they "find the one quite adequate."

When developing The Next Generation, he doubled down on the idea that humanity had abandoned religion. Captain Picard shows disdain for it more than once.

That's disappointing to hear. DS9 messed it up too. When Captain Sisko and Kassidy Yates were discussing their impending wedding, Kassidy said that her mother would have wanted her wedding performed by a minister. Ugh!

What you saw would actually be the 4th season premiere, not the 3rd.

I don't get to see it anymore because I canceled my Paramount+ subscription after they broadcasted the stupid UFC match on the white house lawn and remained silent when the idiot fighter declared that Michelle Obama was a man.

Little loss. I thought season One was good, Season Two, not so much. Season Three saw a big drop in quality. I understand one of the Season Four episodes will be a muppet episode. I've seen enough.

Not to mention Kirk and Company violating the Prime Directive with joyous abandon. Roddenberry’s vision has always been more honoured in the breach than in the observance.

A performer dressed as Spider-Man was forced to calm and entertain disgusted moviegoers after a nauseating smell cleared out a screening of Brand New Day.

Crowds poured into the corridors of the Plaza Bocagrande shopping center in Cartagena, Colombia, with footage showing some audience members covering their faces as they escaped the auditorium.

According to The Sun, the chaos reportedly began after someone unleashed an especially foul fart during the movie that was probably powerful enough to defeat all the Avengers in their prime.

The incident took place on August 2 at the Cine Colombia multiplex, with the smell becoming so unbearable that viewers abandoned their seats.
