No different than Pharaoh telling all the Egyptians that He was God. The Pope is one of the most powerful people on the planet, and on that note, I'm pretty sure all of the most powerful people believe in God.

I trust the Pope because there have been Popes for over a thousand years and no one has stopped the Pope from existing.
