somebody tell President Obama..
May 23, 2011 at 2:22 pm
President Obama is on a state visit to the UK this coming week.
Ahead of the visit he has proudly proclaimed that " the Queen symbolises the best of England ".
Please America, remind him that 40% at least of the UK population is anti-monarchy!

And here I thought that the Queen *was* the best England had to offer. She just *won't die*
I interpret his statement as a notation of the current queen... the next set in the monarchy is largely worthless
Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day

Would I be right in thinking that this 40% of the UK that you mention is mostly, politically speaking, left-leaning? Would I also be right in thinking that most of the pro-monarchy factions of the UK are more conservative?
If so, this is Obama's modes operandi: pander to the right, toss the left under the bus and then wonder why your base is so demoralized.

I'm right-wing, voted for the Conservatives, and I support abolition of the monarchy. All political parties that have any power are pro-monarchy. This isn't a coincidence; it is literally impossible for a party to get elected and be anti-monarchist. All elected MPs have to pledge to uphold the monarchy when they are sworn in. That's why a lot of Northern Ireland republicans (usually from the Sinn Fein party) abstain from Parliament, even though they are elected by the majority.
I think the only way of getting rid of the monarchy in this country would be via a civil war. No party can hold a referendum on the matter, since doing so would be grounds for dismissal from parliament.

I guess most of the 40% will be left-of-centre but many on the right favour a republic to our outdated monarchy.
I recognise your disappointment with Obama after he promised so much. The history of UK politics is littered by betrayal of Socialist ideals by the Labour Party ( supposedly the left-wing party of the main 3 parties ) when in power.
From a Socialist perspective, monarchy is clearly reactionary and is there to prop up the Capitalist system.
One day in the future, either by the ballot box or by revolution, hopefully the UK will become a Socialist Republic.
President Obama also needs to be reminded of the " impartiality " of the British Royal Family. Notable by their not getting an invite to the recent wedding were the last two Labour Prime Ministers ( Brown and Blair ). For the Obama visit, Buck House has stopped filming by tv channels of the current Labour leader, Ed Miliband, meeting the President. The same treatment is not expected for Tory Prime Minister Cameron.
So much for the royals being above politics!

I can empathize since we in America have a rule about churches being under obligation to stay out of politics. In theory, we have separation of church and state. In return for non-profit status, a church is supposed to respect that boundary. A church that wantonly violates this rule can have it's non-profit status stripped away. ...in theory. In reality, churches on both the left and right (but mostly the right wing) get involved all the time in political matters with no consequences.
In truth, I think it's unrealistic to think that such public figures or organizations, both of which have a history in dominating political life, could easily abstain from any political activity.

Well let's see......he's redifined relations between our 2 countries......instead of the " special " relationship we now have an " essential " one. Begs the question essential for whom or what????
