Well, Garfunkel & Oates (Indie/Alternative Folk - Pregnant Women are Smug, You Me and Steve, Sex with Ducks) are in concert to-morrow night in Denver, and my wife and I have tickets! Road trip south tomorrow!
If you have never seen them, they have a YouTube page with videos (Sex with Ducks is a skewering of Rev. Pat Robertson that you should not miss), and are notorious for their – ah – colourful lyrics. The Wall Street Journal interviewed them and called them the “Flight of the Female Conchords.” WSJ interview link They are from LA and rarely leave California, preferring to play in local comedy clubs and such there.
Beth decided to put in a call to her old friend, who lives in Denver, the world-renown blues and comedy singer Blind Lemming Chiffon. (Dead People Got No Reason, Police Got My Dad)
She caught him up on things (like we moved to Nebraska), and Blind (I guess that’s his first name) invited us to come down early tomorrow to spend the day, and evening after the concert, provided I bring my hammered dulcimer (about the only string instrument he does not play). He insists, as I finished seventh at last year’s National Hammered Dulcimer competition (out of thirteen – I beat six, six beat me), and offered us an overnight stay at his home if I do. That’s probably much cheaper than a motel, but potentially more dangerous due to the high pun level.
So now I get to visit the Temple of Flipper (Chiffon’s home) and meet the earth-shaking blues singer. He could challenge my parents for most musical instruments stuffed into one home; he gave away his piano recently, perhaps so he could get more string instruments. If he and my mother were in the same room, the mass of puns and barbs would be such that the area would be collapsed into a pun black hole. (No victim can achieve escape velocity of the Pun Radius.) Either that or the room would explode.
And we have good news: the title search on our old home in Ponca City, Oklahoma has been completed; the way is cleared for the auction.
[shameless advert] Our house in Ponca City on the Ponca Reservation (Chez Ponca ) is to be auctioned to the highest bidder ($1,000 down, balance at close) on July 5, at 6PM Central Time, at 304 S Ash St, Ponca City, Oklahoma. Bring your money; chance to get a house cut-rate (but not likely). That will complete the final step of our move to Broadwater.
Details of the auction, with photos (in case you want to buy our house; has newly-refinished hardwood floors and brand-new carpeting installed in the kitchen and back room in April) can be found at Nicholson Auction link to house page. Central air/heat, water heater one year old, privacy-fenced, four-city-lot sized yard (largest on that side of town). Garage, paved driveway. Comes with porch swing.
Proceeds from the sale to be donated to our checking account.
James.
