Complete accord between us on the "so fucking what" though...lol.
Existence is cruel. There should be a law against it.
And so there are laws. How does this apply to the question of "why" they are or are not followed? Rhetorical: It does not apply. There are laws against stealing. So why do people steal?

At this point it's only for the lurkers isn't it. Many practices that were once used in the butchering of livestock are currently illegal because they are defined as being cruel, Halal fits the definition of a cruel practice..as determined by those who determine such things, but is not, in fact, illegal. It remains untouched by law as an article of faith. Follow?

Not at all. I'm all the way back trying to comprehend how a thing being hypocritical in any way affects its legality or the process of law.

Because the hypocrisy of the 'ritual' in question goes AGAINST what the law fucking stands for. That's how it affects "its legality or the process of law". I know you're a raging anarchist Sae but how can you miss that one?

Sae, there are laws that are there to protect the welfare of animals....even when they are being slaughtered. What is being argued is halal goes against he laws the rest of society has to follow and gets away with it purely because it claims it is a religious practice.

Stunning would seem to solve many objections but the font of all wisdom didn't need electricity 1500 years ago, so why change now?
I think worse than the end is the final weeks of life, sheep are crammed onto ships and many die in the heat and shit on the way across the Indian Ocean. The ones lucky enough to arrive in the holy land get tossed in some car trunk and then get taken home to face a noble death.
Unfortunately we cannot sell meat to Islamic nations, because of the various interpretations of halal which exist in the Islamic world. Also I believe Muslims believe that they cannot eat meat touched by dirty kuffar hands. Instead we have to transport the animals alive across the Indian Ocean to places like Indonesia, Malaysia and the Gulf Countries.

France is working on banning the practices that Muslims and Jews use to slaughter their animals. They are under for attack for infringing on religious rights. It seems just about anything can be legal in the name of religion.

This gets to what I think is the heart of the problem, and that is that the freedom of religion is regarded more leeway than any other freedom. Imagine if I started throwing pigs off of an overpass and claimed it was might right under freedom of speech to put across my message that eating pigs is evil. Would that work? No. The fact that it has taken even this long for most countries to even consider banning these slaughtering practices just shows how much society is willing to live with in the name of freedom of religion. We need to stop allowing ludicrous and stupid actions to be perpetrated in the name of religion.

Quote:Why is halal legal?
Halal meat is legal because they made it legal. What else could it be?
And why do some of you think that this is cruel?
I think it's a matter of perspective on which method you think is more "humane"? To me, slaughtering the animal vs. stunning the animal with a gun doesn't make a difference. We have to kill it anyways, and the Islamic method is to cut with a sharp knife, on the neck, as fast as possible. Also, the ritual is basically an act of sacrifice. When killing a cow, in that manner, it increases our gratitude for God's creation because we are sacrificing the animal. And we have to mention God's name right before the killing the animal.
Unfortunately, the reality is that in many places - the "halal" industry is corrupt - they slap a "halal" label on the package just because there is a market for it and money to be made.
