Rhythm! Kichi! Class is going to be GREAT this semester! [dances around happily] She gave us a list of 117 plants to learn - HAH! Make it 200! I'm ecstatic!
And I've had too much coffee! lol. I'm drinking a beer now and will be on chat.

Not a trick of perspective. That she-bitch was just as round as the hose, and deserved to be on the business-end of an S-Mart boomstick. Scared the shit out of me when I looked up.
Next time Rhythm talks about "monsters" in the South, remember this and realize that I'm only in NC. The further south you go, the bigger things get.

I'll like to skip all the steps at the beginning and go straight to kill. I'm a scorched earth kinda guy.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

One of the trees we're learning about in my Plant ID course:
Taxodium distichum: Bald Cypress
One of the south's most beautiful trees, I think.
The foliage is feathery, spiraling around the stems, and it has really interesting looking seeds that have already come out on the tree we have on school grounds.
They tend to live in swamps, and as they age they put out "buttresses" at the bottom for stability
And unlike most of the others in its family, it's actually deciduous (hence the name "bald") and looks rather beautiful in the fall
They grow into such odd shapes sometimes

I love Cypress. Pinophyta are the largest carbon sink on the planet, they've been around for about 300 million years and benefited greatly from the Permian-Triassic extinction event (in which 83% of all genera went extinct). Making it through the "Mother of All Extinction Events" is an impressive feat. Real survivors.

Known also as 'Swamp Cypress' here.
They ARE beautiful...for a myriad of reasons.

Botany photo of the day:
Paepalanthus stellatus

I love that configuration. Haemanthus Multiforus is similar (and very easy to grow).
