I have always had doubts about religion even when I was a child. I pondered why god would grant some prayers over others. I am a Paramedic and have been for 15 years. Shortly after becoming a Paramedic I had a bad call where a child had died because of neglect. I asked several religious people and even the pastor at my church why god would allow such a thing to happen. He said that god works in mysterious ways and he has a plan for each of us. He also said that bad things happen to good people for no reason. I knew that. I didn't need him to tell me that. Then I started reading books by Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens and the rest is history.

Welcome aboard. Again.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Actually, you just returned to the state you were in when you were born. Before all that programming. It's a big step in any case. Now go enjoy life without the Great Sky Fairy looming over you.
Being a paramedic is tough work, kudos for that! ^_^
Welcome to AF! When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
Welcome aboard. As you say, the rest is history, but it couldn't have been an easy transition. Atheism comes with it a host of philosophical questions that are not usually adressed by religions, as I'm sure you're beginning to explore. i hope that although you may have found religion to be meaningless that you don't find life without it to be so. That is an assumption made all to often by theists about atheists. I find meaning everywhere. I proceed from the assumption that although we were not made for any reason, we're here, against all odds, and that's pretty damn special and precious. You chose a career that requires you to save lives. That's pretty damn special, too.
Welcome and kudos to you for recognising the pastor was not answering your question with his inappropriately-timed cop-out argument. It took me years to stop swallowing that particular slice of their bullshit pie. ^^
