According to the Old Testament God has a lot of names but three of them are the most frequent :El,Elohim,Jehovah. According to scientific linguists who searched the Bible the name El is perhaps the oldest being the master of all Gods of the peoples living in the land of Cannan (now Israel) in the 13-12 th century B.C. The ancient Israelites which settled in Canaan adopted El as their God but renamed him as their unique and almighty God with the name of Elohim, which is a plural form of the name El Apparently in a latter period they adopted also the name Jehova a name whose meaning is still not decoded . Fact is that in the Bible one finds some texts depicting an event ,like for instance the six days of creation of the world ,which are repeating themselves one including the name Elohim and the other with the name Jehovah.
Many Gods have many names. You need to be specific.
What I want to know is what is Gods gender? Does God even have one? If not then why do we call God a 'he'?
As George Carlin says, if God exists it must be a man. No woman would fuck things up so badly!
None of these are names. They are diffrent variations of a tittle and in diffrent languges. Most mean something like 'Lord' and Jehovah is a German corruption of the tittle Yahweh. for instance, El means Lord while Elohim is the same tittle with an other honorific added on.

dagda, to focus on the original post and the name of God spoken by Lilith, I see on your profile you list yourself as "Gnostic"
As an atheist I dismiss the story of Lilith beceaus it is in the same league of myth as Genesis. It has the same credibility, that is, I don't disregard it merely because it is not in the canon of Christian Scripture, I disregard it because it is myth. Like George & the Dragon. But are you full-on Gnostic? ie You believe in a monothesit deity, the fall of man, a dualistic divine realm/material world and all the rest of it? And if so, why have you latched on to an obscure belief system that was popular in the 2nd and 3rd centuries? You've chosen as your user name the Irish version of the "Father God" . I'm not having a go at you, I am genuinely interested.
'How can you say, "We are wise, for we have the law of the LORD," when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely? Jer 8:8
A child of five would understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five. Groucho Marx
I only used Lilliths story because I know she mentions God's real name and used it as a backing to show I did not want the tittles. My logic behind this was that the person who new about Lilith was probably more likly to know this than anyone else. I've heard it, I just can't remember what it is.
As for full Gnostic, probably not. I sympathise greatly with the Gnostics and am slowly coming to consider myself Gnostic, but I do not have enough material( e.g. Nag Hammadi ect) to decide how far I go or to what sect I belong to. Just to clerify, the Gnostics I sympathis with are more duliste.g. the Hebrew God is nasty and imperfect and the real 'god' is beond the material world. The Fall of man was because of the imperfect God, not human errorsect... I 'latched on' to Gnosticism because I became sick with the mainstream hypocracy and saw Gnostics as making far more sense. The Dagda is because he was the 'good god' in celtic mythology and I have roots in Ireland-about 5 generations back, so pretty distant-and live in Scotland so have always loved anything celtic and I love the imagery surrounding Dagda. MS Encarta describes it as follows Quote:Jehovah, name of the God of the Hebrew people as erroneously transliterated from the Masoretic Hebrew text. The word consists of the consonants JHVH or JHWH, with the vowels of a separate word, Adonai (Lord). What its original vowels were is a matter of speculation, for because of an interpretation of such texts as Exodus 20:7 and Leviticus 24:11, the name came to be regarded as too sacred for expression; the scribes, in reading aloud, substituted "Lord" and therefore wrote the vowel markings for "Lord" into the consonantal framework JHVH as a reminder to future readers aloud. The translators of the Hebrew, not realizing what the scribes had done, read the word as it was written down, taking the scribal vowel markings as intrinsic to the name of their God rather than as a mere reminder not to speak it. From this came the rendition Jehovah. The evidence of the Greek church fathers shows the forms Jabe and Jâo to be traditional, as well as the shortened Hebrew forms of the words Jah (see Psalms 68:4, for example) and Jahu (in proper names). It indicates that the name was originally spoken Jaweh or Yahwe (often spelled Yahweh in modern usage). Etymologically, it is a third person singular, imperfect, probably of the verb hawah (or hajah), signifying "to be." The older interpreters explain the verb in a metaphysical and abstract sense; the "I am" of Scripture is "He who is," the absolutely existent. Pete Quote:What I want to know is what is Gods gender? Does God even have one? If not then why do we call God a 'he'? You would be suprised to know God is not a single individual the bible reveals him as seven individuals. This might come as a bit of a shock. But that is why there are seven days of creation, and why seven is used where ever God is going to perform a miracle. Among seven members there is the distinct posibility for one to be female like. But God is not like us physically, that is why he made Jesus to be the human face of God. So Justin Martyr said that the prophets believed that God was a seven fold Spirit. So this should be able to be found in scripture. Zechariah 4 and onwards shows us a physical representation of God. He is represented as 7 golden lamps stands, the lamp is called the the LORD of the whole earth. On either side of the lamp are the two anointed ones, or Cheriabim, which mirror those found on the ark of the presence (on either side of the mercy seat) in the temple which was built by Israel according to the pattern God delivered to Mosus on the mount. The lamps are said to be the seven spirits of God which are also called the eyes of the LORD. This same lamp was found also in the temple of the Lord built by Mosus in the desert. |
