RE: The Value of Life
Facepalm
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

The author of that first article, Francis Phillips, is a moron.

She just doesn't get it.

Not that I'm surprised.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Quote:I sometimes think we Christians don’t emphasise enough to our non-believing friends that the grave is not victorious and that death has no sting.

it can happen to you,

I'll ask their headstone what the score is when they're dead.

Christianity is fucked if that's its great selling point.

Thanks but no thanks as I prefer reality to feel good delusions.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

RE: The Value of Life
Francis Phillips is being quite the hypocrite here isn't she? Considering she's mouthing off about atheism when she doesn't understand what it means and ignoring she's part of a cult that looks forward to death, treating this precious finite life as the 'doormat to wipe her feet on' and enter the completely nonsensical state of 'after-death-infinite-life'.

And dragging Steve Jobs into her article is rather underhanded of her as well, about as insensitive as those idiot Catholic brethren of hers writing news columns on 10th Sept 2001 announcing "we shouldn't mourn 9/11 or the destruction of this world as our real home is with god".

Sometimes I get the impression they are trying to infuriate people for fear of being ignored.

RE: The Value of Life
Quote: For Christians, death is not the point of life; it is “the life of the world to come” that we recite – often so unthinkingly – in the Creed at Mass

The bolded part says it all.
That will never hold up in court...

RE: The Value of Life
My dear Francis you seem to be
under the illusion that life is without
meaning for me because I do not share
your belief. But why are you afraid of just
accepting death as it is ? Why do you think if
I do not share your metaphysical fantasy that my
life is meaningless ? Do you know why religion exists
It is because you cannot stand the thought of life ceasing
for ever. Even if it could be proved beyond all reasonable doubt
God did not exist you would still invoke Him as a coping mechanism
for death. The only reason Man thinks like this is because of his highly
developed brain which allows him to philosophise beyond the ordinary and
mundane and ponder his existence in the grand scheme of things. But that in it
self does not mean the laws of biology have to be suspended for our convenience :
death comes to us as to all life on Earth. We are no different. But then what is the point of
life you ask ? Why does there have to be a point to life ? This is a very human thing : to attach
significance to everything. There is no point to life beyond what you make of it yourself. We are here
by chance. We do what we can and that is it. When the time comes to shake off our mortal coil we do so and
that is it. End of. No more. Have you ever noticed how we have to sometimes reference things through an emotional filter
because we cannot accept them as they are ? Ever noticed that ? You ought to. You do it yourself every time you reference your faith
You find it hard to accept the truth. Fair enough. But with all due respect to you I believe you are mistaken. But nice talking to you. Take care now
A MIND IS LIKE A PARACHUTE : IT DOES NOT WORK UNLESS IT IS OPEN
