RE: Meditation, in small doses can it have large effect? your thoughts on this article
Personally, I shoot things when I need to deal with pretty much any anxiety.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

True, but I can't be stoned all the time. Big Grin

Interesting in that while my therapist supports marijuana for treatment of anxiety, my prescriber is absolutely opposed.

I can't be not stoned all the time. Hehe

It's interesting to read about how you all prefer to relax or increase concentration in your own ways, But I am also curious to find out whether you all think that the practice of mindfulness when doing certain tasks and undertakings, even very simple things, can increase ones feeling of participation.

The reason I ask is because life tends to run very fast in the eyes of most people, and alot of the time there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day. The consumer culture we live in coupled with a hectic lifestyle and schedual often makes it hard for people to slow down a little and truly savour the experiences they are having.

Do you guys think the practice of mindfulness, not sitting still with your eyes closed meditating and/or saying mantras, but just training your mind to focus intently on the task in hand and the sensations being derived, do you think that it could be beneficial to peoples experience of their everyday lives?

The old saw about slowing down to smell the flowers has merit, J, so yes.

Yes.

Just this morning, and forgive the mundanity of this, but I posted on my status that I didn't understand why I hear so many women complain about having to shave their legs. It's one of those weird conversational things you always hear - how winter is great because you don't have to shave every day, blah blah, hate razors, yada yada.

I actually love the entire act of getting ready in the morning - provided I have coffee first, and I think that's because I don't treat it like something to "get through," which is what a lot of people do to most of the activities in their lives.

Its why I like the entire process of cooking - from shopping for to eating it.

Relishing in things helps make time pass, and more enjoyably.

Absolutely. I was a Buddhist for years, and a huge part of my practice was being completely present in everything I set out to do. I would focus only on what I was doing, and work to be "in the moment". It gives you a greater appreciation for perfunctory tasks and day-to-day life.
That will never hold up in court...

Phaedra, what steered you out of Buddhism?

Oddly enough, it was something that the Buddha said: "Doubt everything. Find your own light." It is still a part of my life, but I leave out the supernatural elements like enlightenment. Buddhism is more a philosophy for me at this point.

They frown on that here in the city, unfortunately. Also - when I'm alone, what would I shoot? Firearms and severe anxiety mix about as well as teenage drivers and whiskey.
