He's not focusing on the material in class if he is preoccupied by a student's learning curve in learning what reincarnation means.
If he wants to downgrade his irritation level, this is what he should be focusing on in my opinion, the material, not other peoples learning curves or lack of understanding of some material in class, and thus interpreting them to be idiots because of this.
I can see though how he might feel a little uncomfortable being in a class where his views are so radically different than the majority, but variety is the spice of life. I do think the class might be a bit slanted towards Chrisitianity because of this maybe, so he might see some signs of this. Which would naturally irritate him as they are antithetical to his views and opinions.
