If you think about it pedestrians are quite vulnerable against 1 ton of metal hurtling towards them. Maybe pedestrians should get the right of way because of this. :/

RE: Well, Geez
There are faults of both parts in the pedestrian/driver thing. Alot of drivers are assholes, but alot of pedestrians are too, and forget that they stop more easily than half a tonne of steel and plastics. Every case is a case. As a pedestrian, I've been almost hurt, even in pedestrian crosses, but also as a driver, and I am a religiously safety driver.

As a pedestrian, to me its easy to minimize trouble, avoid crossing out of the zebras, and on those stop by them, looking at traffic. most people will see that i intent to cross and give me passage.

As a driver, I hope pedestrians do that before crossing and don't come running from nowhere and cross the zebra(the pedestrian crosses, I forget the name in english...).

In summary, I feel more confident as a pedestrian, because I'm carefull, and less in a car, that isn't something you can stop instantaneouly, I must rely on the good sense of others in botyh cases.

I am of the opinion the pedestrians of this day and age are slack arsed buffoons who seem to think that they have some "god given right" to have several tonnes of metal stop for them.

Pedestrians should give way to traffic and NO the freeway is NOT a safe place and your god won't help you.

Or, we could leverage that stuff between our ears and the strength in our arms to put either the traffic or the pedestrians over or under the other. Any which way is more compatible to the area undergoing improvement. Proper planning prevents piss-poor performance.

Look, I don't want you guys to get the idea that someone just ran the kid over in a crosswalk - the kid was jaywalking to the extreme on a known busy road that is a crossroads of sorts for people to get to several major areas, with thru-traffic from Route 29. It was also dark by the time I got out, though I don't know if it was so when he was struck, and I notice that kids these days seem to have no concept of how truly shitty most car headlights are thanks to the prodigious use of street lamps in most urban areas. I know mine are. I wouldn't have a single clue you were there until it was too late, unless I had my high beams on.

Not that I'm blaming the kid. This wasn't in a portion of Charlotte where it's easy to move around if you don't have a car or someone to drive you. Even in Concord usually people are close enough to a gas station or little kiosk they could walk to if they need necessities, but many suburban areas are just too far spread out for people to easily get what they need - I have a feeling he was going to the nearby gas station for odds and ends and simply didn't want to waste the effort to walk further away from wherever he was staying in order to cross "safely".

Yep, abject stupidity and laziness. Still, we spend a lot of time trying to save people from their own terrible judgement, we could probably throw up a few more pedestrian over/underpasses.

Underpasses would be better down here, I think. We have enough shit spanning over the road, although I hear Charlotte's been discussing moving phone lines and crap underground thanks to space issues and because we've been having nastier winters with downed poles and ripped lines.

I am blaming the "kid" and their parents!!

What the hell is wrong with people now-a-days? You are so totally de-funked as a human that you are incapable of judging how far away something (like a set of head lights) is?? Or have the aptitude of an amoeba that you can not judge whether it is safe for you to cross a road??

WTF?
