Nobody deserves to be harassed for having harmless beliefs, like that girl does.
Wow, yes, that is definitely the polar opposite of the people around me (also the bible belt of the US). I would love to be in that situation just for a little while versus having to pretend to pray at every function I attend.
I agree that either way, it's terrible to be harassed. Often, harassment comes from the majority against the minority so in my case, I would be the one harassed because I do NOT have religious beliefs (hence why I'm a closet Atheist!)
Oh, and btw, WELCOME to the forums from South Caroliina!

Thx. Wow, yeah. Up until i was 15 i didn't even know that some Americans had to hide their atheism like that. When i first heard the term atheist, it didn't come with a negative connotation, and it was easy to say "OK, that makes sense - so I'm an atheist then". I've never needed the label before, cause nobody in my local community brought up the religion discussion, so i didn't even know about it until 10th grade.
Wow, I'd like to spend a day in your shoes, just to see what it would be like. I don't know if i could handle living in a community like yours.
Do you have atheist friends in your community?

Yep, growing up here, the word "atheist" had a very negative meaning and I really didn't label myself as one until I joined this forum in September... so only 2 months ago.
No, I don't have any Atheist friends in my community but I have this place so that helps! I really never plan on telling people around me that I am Atheist as I don't want my children to get ridiculed for their mom's beliefs (or lack of beliefs). I did tell my hairdresser last month and she almost flipped out on me and just kept asking dumb questions like, " then how WAS the world created?" Thank goodness she didn't die my hair purple or something in retaliation! LOL
Ok, wait, this is your intro! Enough about ME!
What do you do for a living? Married? Age...etc....

Wow. That's something i just don't understand. Why would people do things to someone just for holding a different belief. How is your belief hurting anyone?

I'm seriously at the point Heather, where I'd punch someone in the fucking face for asking me that in response to any confidence I gave them in even breaching the subject of religion in the first place. So I tell you what, maybe you won't ever "come out of the closet" but if you ever wanna get a little chuckle and live vicariously, you just go ahead and tell people that you know an atheist, and that said atheist is all about hitting people in the face for asking retarded questions.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

You know, I never thought of it that way. You are so right. It took so much for me to even admit it to her and then she asks her stupid questions. I will see her again this weekend... hopefully the topic of religion doesn't surface or I may go postal on her....
Haaa, maybe I should start stories about the face punching Atheist I am friends with... could be good for a laugh!

Welcome.
So I've been thinking... I want two avatar slots. No idea what I'll stick in the second one, but I want it.
Pizza is god, that is the question.

Mob mentality, fear, hate, irritation, horror, terror, precedents, peer pressure, you name it.
I even know where it should go. Right over there where it says:

On the lefthand side of that.
Please give me a home where cloud buffalo roam
Where the dear and the strangers can play
Where sometimes is heard a discouraging word
But the skies are not stormy all day

Welcome to the forums. We really are a global bunch now, aren't we? Off the top of my head, I know we have regular posters from all corners of the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada and Australia, and we definitely now also have posters from Finland, Norway, Turkey, New Zealand, Portugal, Fiji (!), and fuck knows where else. If everyone contributed to the usermap, it would look pretty awesome.
