CAIRO (AP) - Islamists appear to have taken a strong majority of seats in the first round of Egypt's first parliamentary vote since Hosni Mubarak's ouster, a trend that if confirmed would give religious parties a popular mandate in the struggle to win control from the ruling military and ultimately reshape a key U.S. ally.

Final results, expected Friday, will be the clearest indication in decades of Egyptians' true political views and give the long-banned Muslim Brotherhood a major role in the country's first freely elected parliament. An Islamist majority could also herald a greater role for conservative Islam in Egyptian social life and shifts in foreign policy, especially toward Israel and the Palestinians.

The showing in Egypt - long considered a linchpin of regional stability - would be the clearest signal yet that parties and candidates connected to political Islam will emerge as the main beneficiaries of this year's Arab Spring uprisings.

I must admit ,the so-called "Arab Spring" has me confused. In my opinion, there is no such thing as a spontaneous revolution of the great unwashed.There is ALWAYS someone pulling the strings

So I ask myself, cui bono? and what has changed for the majority of the population? Not sure yet..

I'm also highly suspicious of that woman in Burma. Bourgeois and privileged in one of the poorest nations on earth,she's going to build a better Burma for ordinary people? Yeah right. Arabs are always already in the spring. Arabs should not the spring. The revolution should the Arabs. For example, French revolution (1789), American revolution, the revolution against the Ottomans, the Republic of Turkey (1923).

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's top reformist leader said Sunday the liberal youth behind the country's uprising have been "decimated" in parliamentary elections dominated by Islamists and expressed concern about the rise of hard-line religious elements advocating extremist ideas such as banning women from driving.

Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Prize laureate and possible presidential candidate, said he hopes moderate Islamists will rein in the extremists and send a reassuring message to the world that Egypt will not go down an ultraconservative religious path.
