How should science deal with creationism?
Thanks to downbeatplumb for the S.P. on this Big Grin

There's a discussion on the 24th at our local discovery centre as follows..

Quote:Event start date: 24 September 2009
Event title: How should science deal with creationism?

Description:

Meet at SEARCH at 6.30pm to view the DARWIN TODAY exhibition, before joining our panellists at the Discovery Centre at 7.30pm, to discuss whether evolution and creationist teachings can co-exist. Panellists include Professor Michael Reiss – Professor of Science Education at the University of London, Dr Simon Kolstoe – UCL College of Medicine and Dr David Rosevear from the Creation Science Movement. The debate will be chaired by BBC Radio 4’s Sue Broom. Audience participation is encouraged!

Contact details: Sarah Greenaway
Event times: 6.30pm at SEARCH 7.30pm at Gosport Discovery Centre
Event cost: FREE entry but places must be booked in advance from 2 September on: 0845 603 5635
Venue phone: 023 9252 3463
Venue email: [email protected]

I wold urge anyone who can to pop along as it looks like it might be good fun Big Grin I'm also thinking of going and when the topic gets around to teaching creationism alongside evolution I might just ask if the following should also be taught as well because there is exactly the same amount of evidence for them all. And if not then what makes the Christian creation myth so special?

Yeah, Darwinian! Edit it into your post, at the very beginning if you would please! Tongue

How could you even SUGGEST teaching Christianity without first teaching about the FSM! FSM Wink

And I agree with Kyu, this is a good thing.

RE: How should science deal with creationism?
It should not deal with crationism. They are two different things. At one time we had a place for creationism in science. It was called catastrophism. In the 19th century catastrophism was abandoned because scientific evidence was found that it wasn't accurate and geologists adopted uniformitarianism.

We all know creationism doesn't mean jack squat. I've never had any science teacher teach anything to do with Christianity. Even in classes that deal with historical geology they mention catastrophism for about ten seconds and that's only to say "then they adopted catastrophism and it wasn't accurate".
