Why do we need god?

Apparently we have bunch of people here who need god.
Why do we need god?
Nobody can prove he exists. He does not stop murders, illnesses and bullets.
People still suffer.
People still die.
Nobody can see him except fr0d0.
Why do we need such a god? For what?

I can think of lots of reasons.
Believing in him makes people happy
Believing in him means they can be part of a social group
Believing in him stops them being scared
Believing in him makes them feel confident about their place in the universe
Believing in him makes them behave better
Believing in him makes them feel important
Before the "yeahbuts" swoop in, not all of those apply to everyone. But I've experienced each of those at different times.

God is needed to give believers the smug satisfaction of thinking they have all the answers.
He also makes a good tool to keep the poor ignorant and happy with their plight... Have a crap life, keep quiet, pray and don't do anything about it because... insert savior of choice here... will be here to save you soon. And, if he doesn't come, you'll have a better life in heaven when you die.

The flaw in your question is asking why WE need God. Lots of people don't. But some do.
