I can understand if someone wants to end their life. There is no misery after you are dead. I can't understand why someone would choose to make their life more miserable.

I think cherry-picking is different from open disagreement or rejection - Most believers I know who don't follow all the bible claim that they rejected certain verses for many reasons, so they're not really picking, just rejecting some as unworthy. I agree that the standard used to evaluate religion are biased, but there's not an easy way to tell and convince people that magical sky daddy doesn't exist.

I doubt they wouldn't have even skimmed past the vast majority of the Bible full of horrible shit though.

Unless they never read it at all and just listened to a priest or vicar preaching the less extreme stuff.....

But I doubt it's all non-extreme considering the resulting bigotry often.

Personally I think it's a combination of cherry-picking, denial, emotional reasoning, all sorts.

Besides the priest/vicar would have done some cherry picking, so ultimately it comes from a cherry-picker.

But yes it's a combination of factors.

Not at all. It is absolutely a real thing. However, in this case it is not only impossible for me to understand but also impossible to feel sorry for them. If you blind yourself on purpose...... Fuck I don't know what to say.

Well I find it very sad for you that you are unable to feel compassion for someone suffering from a serious illness simply because you do not understand it.

Okay KUSA....

Step 1. Believe mental illness is real. So, in your words you do so, you pass that.

Other steps you need to follow:

Step 2. Recognize that due to this specific person's mental illness her illness caused her to blind herself.

Step 3. Infer that she is a victim of that physical tragedy due to her mental illness.

Step 4. Feel compassion both for her mental state that caused her to mutilate herself and lose her eyes, and that physical state of blindness caused by that mental state.

So you're 1/4 there.

I'm sorry your on clueless ground here.I'm not. I actually have a good idea of what you go through because I have a juvenile cataract that left me legally blind as a child. Now you understand that in many ways this woman is far more disabled then you are. We understand alot more about physical disabilities and how to help people live with them, then we do psychological. I am going to give a example here from my personal life. My ex fiance has cereberal palsy, you know often people disrespected her for it? Not once when I was with her. And she could not even manage something as simple as carrying a cup some days.

Now I have a learning disability that prevents me from producing legible hand writing and I got thrown out of paramedic school on that basis alone. That's the chasm. Between physical and mental disabilities in our culture. You have no more right to simply tell this woman not to maime herself without giving her the help she clearly needs then I to tell you to stop being blind without care.

By the way, I probably should have said this in my first reply. If transsexualism isn't viewed as a 'disorder' but rather a 'mental condition', then perhaps it's wrong to view BIID as a disorder rather than a mental condition. The striking similarities (feeling as though one is trapped in the wrong body, and needing physical change to feel at peace with one's body) suggest to me the disease-model of psychiatry is often flawed.

Also, I should note the lady on Springer did not say she had BIID, and I don't want to presume to know what condition she might have, I just wanted to point out how rude it is to label someone as "wacky" or "dumb". She is also a transsexual which suggests to me that BIID and transsexualism may have quite a lot in common with each other and can coexist in the one patient, although as I mentioned I'm not suggesting to know what condition the Springer lady actually has. Just pointing out the similarities to the blind lady with BIID - they both say they felt as if they needed physical change in the bodies from when they were children - and they both went to extreme lengths to achieve it - and they are both much happier with their bodies following the change.
