Internet speed, 2015

RE: Internet speed, 2015
I actually just changed VDSL2 plans, I don't think it will affect my speed, but I'll post it when it's transferred to the new plan.

Here's the plan: Buisness VDSL2 $99.99/month, includes all local, national (except 1300's), & mobile calls on VOIP. The speed I get should be 40-50Mbits down, & about 20Mbits up. I bought the business plan rather than the residential plan because the shaping speed is 20Mbits - which for Aussies is still "fucking fast internet mate!" Plus it should exempt me from the mandatory data retention law, which only applies to residential connections. I had to speak to the Business sales team to sign up for it - had a good banter & yarn with the bloke as well while doing so!

It's also much better value than the NBN plans (residential or business, which have a shaping speed of just 8Mbps down/1Mbps up for the residential and just 512Kbps/512Kbps for the buisness), even IF the NBN was available I'd still rather pay for VDSL2 - it may only be half the speed (pretty much exactly) for both Up & Down, but the 20Mbps/20Mbps shaping speed can't be beaten.

I'll post back when connected through the new plan, but I think it'll stay the same:

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

Well, at that speed, I can do some pretty cool stuff, actually. For example, if I install a game client on my local computer (Fallout, for example), I could just have all the data files on my home computer, and use a virtual internet drive to access the files. So my little Notebook computer can save its memory.

I can also watch movies on my home computer at work, because at that speed, the movie will download faster than it plays.

This is the point to really "get": at half a Gig/second, the internet is basically a SATA device, like a hard drive or a DVD rom. And that means that ALL the things you'd do, like running software or editing big videos on the fly.

Another thing you can do is remotely access your home computer. Normally, this leads to crap frame rates and a bad experience. But I'm pretty sure I could use my home computer on my work computer, and it would be just like being there.

BennyB I have a question. If you log on to videosz (nsfw, duh), how long does it take you to download all videos on the site? Also, what is the total size of all the videos? Also, after doing that what is your favourite category or niche? Big Grin

Much obliged.

Not sure.  I'm in Korea, so I can't directly access any popular porn site.  My speed through Hotspot Shield is meh.

Supposedly 100Mbps fibre, going through a 52Mbps router and then a Wi-Fi extender...
Good enough to get anything on the phone.
