I'd attempt to reason with them to find out why they felt that way. If they couldn't come up with good reasons for it, I'd dismiss their concerns and tell them that I thought they were wrong. Democracy and free speech is the road to conflict resolution.

That will work if the other person is reasonable, willing to discuss with you respectfully, and you live in a free society and you have rights protecting you. But you've missed the point, what if not - what if the other person is NOT reasonable, what if the other person got to change the laws of the land making you a criminal and now you are facing punishment?
