True, true.... but also a person who the judges could see as playing a good game... maybe...

That was surprising to me.  Usually when they play clips of people making huge statements like "I'm not going to be voted out with an idol" that means they're.... probably going to be voted out with an idol Tongue

But he's almost certain to use the idol, no?

The idol can only be played up to the final 4 vote I think, so he has two more opportunities to play it before it becomes a souvenir he gets to take home with him Tongue

As for the advantage, I would guess it has a similar expiration date, and I don't know whether other people know what the advantage is.  This season was filmed before last season, Second Chances, but after World's Apart, so for these players they've only seen one advantage in play in the game like this, and it was basically the same advantage Tai got - an extra vote.  So they might be able to guess what it is.  Don't know.

The extra vote is a really powerful thing to have in a tie situation or a split-vote situation if it's played right.
The things you know about this show... Cool

Memory challenges like that are a very typical post-merge challenge, and they've done something very close to this in past seasons (I think they did something very like this in the previous Brains-Brawn-Beauty season).  Michelle didn't seem to have trouble completing it. Wink

Michelle is a waitress, right? used to memorizing stuff. I bet that came in handy Wink

Well I thought Tai really needed to play the idol. I was surprised when he didn't do so, and releived that he survived.

Going forward it makes sense that he should play the idol next time and then use the extra vote the time after that. At that point I don't think either will be playable. The further he goes, the more valuable one extra vote becomes.

From the perspective of the other players, Tai really is someone they should get out of the game. They should totally have voted for him this time if only to flush the idol. I did think the beautiful black girl would vote against Tai. Tricky.

Hey does anyone know when the season ends? I'm pretty sure there is an episode this coming Wednesday. Will the series end on a Sunday? Hard to find any info online.

They stopped doing finales on Sunday nights many seasons ago, so it's a really late night on a Wednesday - if you stay up to watch the reunion stuff that is Wink

Last week's boot was so expected that I forgot to post about it Tongue

Thanks.  In the past I sometimes forgot about the show on Sunday and missed the end.  Glad they don't do that anymore.

This is your first season, right? There's a lot of grudges that players take to the final tribal council. "Good gameplay" also has to consider the social aspect of the game. There have been times when the winner was the player who pissed off the least number of people - even at times when they rode coattails the whole time (Natalie won season 19 by virtue of the fact that she was not Russell Hantz, a strategically brilliant player who completely failed at playing the social aspect of the game).

Exactly - Russell is quite possibly the most ingenious player to play the game and should have won his season simply because he dominated so much of the game (luck not withstanding).  But he was also a righteous, arrogant prick who pissed off everyone who wasn't riding his coat tails.

When people refer to a "bitter jury," the season 19 jury is the single best example of that phenomenon. Tongue

I was actually thinking about this the other day with Jason - how his edit differs from Tony's edit from BvBvB1, and Russell's edit from Samoa.  Russell made it to the end but was clearly shown as a deceitful, conniving player all along, got to the end and lost.  Tony played a sort of similar conniving game but was shown as more clownish and kooky, got to the end and won.  Jason was clearly being shown in a villainous light all season in terms of his game play, so I was suspecting that he wouldn't win - but whether he was a finalist I had no idea Tongue

Yep, absolutely he should have won season 19, despite the fact that he was an enormous asshole. Mick had checked out of the game long before, Natalie basically didn't play the game.

Season 20 he absolutely deserved to lose - he didn't learn from his prior game and improve his social game. He couldn't beat either Sandra or Parvati.

Play a bad enough social game, yeah you'll get to the end - but probably not win. I think if the season 20 contestants had an opportunity to see his play, he wouldn't have made the merge.

He also played back to back seasons in 19 and 20 with, I think, days or only a few weeks between filming so he didn't get a chance to get distance from his game and look back on it with any sort of hindsight or anything to see how he was being portrayed, how people were reacting to him, or how he might have improved.

Going into season 20, he played basically the exact same game and, to be fair, it worked for him twice - but his game was not a winning one.  He completely disregarded the social aspect of the game and bullied his way to the end twice.  When he came back the third time in Redemption Island, you could see the difference between him, a guy who is so arrogant he refuses to learn anything, and a guy who learned something from his own previous seasons in Boston Rob.  Rob understood that strategy is what gets you to the end, but it's the social game that clinches the win.

Jason was tanking his social game. He was playing like Russell in the beginning, but being an out and out bully to your tribe mates doesn't get you far.
