That's the way most Linux distros install nowadays.
Mint does the same. Mint is more lightweight and cinammon is perfect for the person that is used to Windows. Also, regular updates and no need for virus software is what makes it the tits for me.

I have Windows 8.1 on my new-ish laptop. I gave in to the siren song of Windows 10 (FREE UPGRADE! SCHEDULE NOW!) and regretted it. I looked good at first overall but when I tried to type anything, it would pause every 3-4 characters and it took me forever to type simple things. I have no idea what the problem was - I tried to troubleshoot it but I gave up and went back to 8.1.

We can probably help you troubleshoot the problem if you want to give it another go? While win10 is free...?

I've heard all the claims that Win10 is so awesome, but the professional world has been exceedingly slow in leaving 7 for any of the new versions. Windows will eventually fall to another OS, it's just a matter of time. I wonder if we're seeing the first cracks in the foundations...

@ Magi
I'm afraid to install Linux in case stuff gets fucked up hehe.
I'd install Mint if I installed a Linux, I reckon. It seems the most n00b friendly.
No install required. The live CD boots and runs from the CD. Never even touches your hard drive. Lets you load it, play with it, run it. Then pull the CD out, reboot and your Windows install is exactly as you left it. Of course will run much slower running from the CD than it would from the hard drive. But it lets you see what the install will look like and explore how everything works without changing your hard drive in the slightest.
It would have to be as easy to use as Linux Mint. And Linux Mint has to be as easy to use as Windows.
Where would I get this CD?

Strange, Windows 10 installed way quicker than 8.1 did for me, not one update failed yet, way easier to use. Windows 8 had multiple problems for me.
It's strange. Different OSes for different computers, I guess.

If a CD is the only safe way I would make sure I don't fuck up my Windows 10 computer, where do I get a Linux Mint CD?

Download Linux Mint and burn it to a CD and boot from it, if I remember correctly. It should give you the option to either install it or test it Live.

If a CD is the only safe way I would make sure I don't fuck up my Windows 10 computer, where do I get a Linux Mint CD? You just download the ISO and burn the image to a bootable DVD. Linux Mint is free.
But, to be clear, installing Linux Mint on a separate partition from your Windows install (which is done with an install wizard) will keep your Windows install safe.
