That sting is like fire.

Like I also stated I chose on the bases of which one might be likely to bring the greater pain.

I always stripped it down so it had very few bumps on it. She would leave marks on occasion but never break the skin. Dad on the other hand would make sure we felt the belt. I knew that it was because they cared and like I said I always figured I came out to the good in the long run, I deserved more than I received. I believe Mom knew that getting the instrument we were going to be punished with was worse for us than the switching.

Wow. Hard to tell if you happened to be exceptionally mature and/or perceptive as a child, or if you were just broken down. As a child, my mother in particular put a lot of effort into breaking me of my "willful ways". Clearly, it never took. Big Grin

I was spanked more than my other siblings combined, and more harshly...though to be fair, I was the only one who had to be chased for an extended period of time, in order to be spanked. By the time she actually caught up with me, she'd be furious.

"Stop running, so I can beat you senseless!"

"I'm sorry, I can't! It's counterintuitive!"

Never ran from my Pop, though.
He'd just swat our palms with the belt a few times, and be done with it.

I understand your opinions on this matter are different from mine.... but I'm sorry that you had to go through that.
And to hear you say that you deserved more, makes me a bit sick to my stomach.

Why it's the truth, I did many things I should have been punished for and wasn't caught. If it were not for the spankings I probably would have wound up in jail for a long time, I could be an unruly kid. Don't feel sorry for me, feel sorry for the ones who didn't have parents who cared enough to punish for wrong doings, many of them are in jail. I learned from my mistakes and now live a peaceful good life.

God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Mature no, if I had been I wouldn't have been as bad as I was. Perceptive maybe, I knew that getting rid of those little barbs on the switch meant less pain and maybe I did have my parents figured out to some degree to know which one would bring the most pain for certain bad behavior. Not always though I remember choosing dad and regretting the choice on occasion. Broken down never I knew my parents loved me deeply they would tell me that often and show it every day in the way we lived our lives as a family. Don't feel sorry for me I'm fine with my childhood and wouldn't change a thing, it's a part of my life that has made me who I am today.

I ran from my mom once and made a mistake of doing it in front of friends, she caught me fairly quickly and it took some time to live that down, man she was fast. Wink

Spoken like a true victim of childhood physical mistreatment.

People like you often rationalize what they experienced by saying they deserved it. But there is a world of difference between being disciplined and taught right from wrong, and being abused. In fact, did you know that according to statistics, individuals who are hit/spanked in childhood are several times more likely to end up in prison? More of the prison population in this country are filled with criminals who had similar experiences to yours. Being hit (especially with objects) can lead to higher levels of anger and aggression when the kid grows up, and it teaches them to use violence to solve problems.

If you think that punishing a kid with a belt or a switch or making them feel pain is the most effective way to teach them and raise them, then I'm sorry. Because if you honestly believe that, it means that you were negatively effected by your parent's treatment; you have been taught that it's okay to abuse children..... and that is the greatest misfortune of all.

Haha, I made the mistake of being particularly daring once. Broke a rule I thought was stupid, can't remember for the life of me what it was though, what I do remember is breaking mom's infamous wooden spoon over my leg thinking I had won.

We were standing in the kitchen when it happened and she whipped a drawer open. There was about ten of them in there. To date I can't recall another time where that woman was moving that fast.

Never ever break an angry parent's punishment implement. D:

That was probably one of the scariest things I saw as a child. My brother broke the paddle with the rebellious smirk on his face that made my heart stop. And then my dad broke every single wooden spoon on his butt.

Nobody yet has talked about this, but I think we should consider that some of the "humane" punishments used by liberals can be as damaging, potentially, as spanking.

The silent treatment is one I got a lot as a kid. Man, THAT was pain, and I would have traded it for a belt in a heartbeat. But I don't think I actually learned anything from it (I was just 5 and couldn't really understand why I was being ignored). Mostly, I remember feeling unloved and outcast, and I think it made me generally insecure. I don't recall at any point, EVER, thinking "I wish I hadn't _____, and I have to remember not to ____ next time."

But the worst thing my parents did was degrade me: (at about age 14) "Benjamin, you know I love you because I HAVE to, I'm your mother. But I really don't like you very much as a person. Sometimes I wish I never had you." And I could see that she was watching me carefully, to see if she could make me cry, something a developing young man should never be made to do, in my opinion. A thousand lashes with a belt won't damage a kid as much as a single sentence uttered in spite, or ANY behavior that is done maliciously rather than out of a desire to help the child develop properly.

I wouldn't call either of those "punishments" humane. It's emotional abuse.

I was spanked but never very hard. Well, never with any implements.

The silent treatment always hurt me the most.
