My husband's mother is a doctor who works at a hospice and she says there have been times when her patients are very close to dying but still conscious, that they claim to start seeing things... like angels, loved ones who have died, etc. I'm not sure what to think of those claims.
I also find the stuff our brains produce interesting. Many people disparage dreams as so much fluff and random noise in the system. I don't agree. Who we take ourselves to be is just one more thing our brains are doing. I think it is interesting to look at it all. Some people's brains given believers the sense of a divine presence. I'm not sure we're in any position to say any part of what our brains are doing is nonsense. Granted it isn't all useful for navigating the physical world, but many things which make us who we are not useful in that way.

I read this as Howard Stern. Still wasn't sure on an answer.

A body under severe stress is capable of very strange things. I was once in a house for two weeks alone (stayed at college for the christmas holidays to study). By the end of it I was near paranoid from the lack of outside contact (the only time I'd see another human was the few times I went down to the shop).
It's not all that big of a leap to see somebody who is dying and in pain and goofed up to their eyeballs on a cocktail of medicines start hallucinating, and when they hallucinate they'll take directly from their cultural upbringing. That is why western NDEs are generally christian, middle eastern ones generally either muslim or jewish, Indian ones hindu or muslim and so on.

The thing is that's only atheists who aren't sophisticated enough to realize that their own personal experience can never account for any God or Afterlife and hallucination is always more probable. IOW only idiot atheists are convinced by that.
If I see ghost what do I do? Keep staring at the ghost until I'm sure it's there and then scream and tell people? No... I keep looking to make sure it's a persistent hallucination and then I look away and go see a Psychiatrist.

No Psychiatrist needed here son.

Not even one second.
The brain work in the same way.
As soon as the heart stop sending blood and oxygen to the brain the brain is automatically off.
No time to do anything at all.
This is science not the kind of bull that you guess.
That clearly means that the consciousness take over and again means that we are immortal.
A bad news for atheist pride but a good news for atheists anyway because we never die and
something great expect us.
@Little Rik. Wrong, the human brain does not work like a light. Scientific studies has shown that areas of the brain are still active after death. In fact, in history, there were recorded examples of executed people's (by having their heads chopped off) eye's still moving and mouth's opening in horror. Therefore, consciousness, at least some part, does still continue to exist in the brain for some time. Therefore, it is very possible the near death experience Howard Storm had was just a manifestation of a dream like experience in his own head it was because his brain was still conscious.
Secondly, you accuse me of not using science and calling my theory bullshit. After that, you then ironically turn around and suggest that a magical man in the sky did it. Rik, you need to understand that just because we don't understand what happens after Death, or what happened before the Big Bang, doesn't support the existence of God. In fact, replace God in all your arguments with The Giant Spaghetti Monster and you'll realise how dumb you sound.

Inc.
You don't get it, do you?
Your problem is that you start judging by taking in consideration big things that you can not understand yet.
Brain and consciousness are two separate things.
The fact that during someone life are stuck together does not mean that once the body-brain die consciousness also die.
This concept belong to the stone age.
You can touch the body and the brain but you can not touch the consciousness.
The consciousness is an abstract entity.
It can not be destroyed ever.
It is made of energy and energy is made of consciousness.
They are the two sides of the same sheet.
Even physics tell us that energy can not be destroyed.
Get real mate and leave the stone age mentality where it belong.
That is so ironic. SO SO Ironic I forgot to laugh.
So your telling me that I'm taking in consideration big things that I can't understand. I can easily turn that back at you with your belief in God. There are thousands of religions out there contradicting each other. How do you know that YOUR religion is the one true one?

Is your own ignorance of self anyone else's problem? We get this all the time. Batshit religiousite a doesn't think that their religion is a religion like batshit religiousite b's religion. Batshit religiousite b holds batshit religiousite a in identical regard.
You do what you believe a disservice by pretending not to believe it, and for what? No reason other than to be contrarian.

Poked my head in to see why the fuck this thread was still going. Turns out, not worth the look. Gabye.
