For animation, I'd recommend http://www.synfig.org/ especially because of the "bone" support. But instead of 2d you might consider 3d animation as there are plenty of free pre-rigged models available and many free biped or skeletal animation setups can be downloaded from the net, so using Blender, a 3d animated movie might be easier for a beginner.
