Ontario Passes Anti-Islamophobia Bill

Ontario Passes Anti-Islamophobia Bill
The Ontario Legislature has unanimously passed a bill condemning Islamophobia:

Unanimous Support for Anti-Islamophobia Motion at Queen's Park

I will readily admit that I am out of my depth with legal matters.

But I need to get something off my chest.

The fact that the  term "Islamophobia" has been made synonymous with racism has troubled me from the get-go.

Personally, as someone whose position is one of  Anti-Theism, it is troubling to me on multiple levels.

I oppose all religion.  I have no real trouble with Deism, per se,
but I personally find all forms of dogma to be problematic as they pass off an unproven idea as "truth"
and even in a dogma that is fairly innocuous in its letter, this still seems a potentially dangerous and damaging practice in principle,

...and I certainly think some dogmas are more noxious in their letter, and in their interpretation and their practice,
than others...the Abrahamic religions foremost among them....Christianity and Islam more than Judaism,
and Islam arguably more than Christianity (though not by much).

(I also note that unlike Islam and Christianity, Judaism is also a "ethno-religious" group;
you are pretty much either born Jewish or you are not; they don't seek to "convert" the way Islam and Christianity do,
and it is that drive to RECRUIT  that I find to be ONE of the more noxious elements of ANY religion)

I will also add that I HATED Christianity, the religion I was raised in,
LONG BEFORE I even knew that any other religion even existed.

Anyway, it makes me crazy that so many of Trump's supporters, many of whom are rabid self-professed Christians,
are so obviously Islamophobic, and fail refuse to see their staggering hypocrisy.
IMO, this seems to give substantial fuel to the argument that Islamophobia is largely another word for Racism.

But, as someone whose perspective is Anti-Theism, it is repugnant to me that I cannot criticize the dogma
without being accused of racism, BECAUSE people think I am one of those racist, white, Islamophobic Christians,

when I, a white middle-class Canadian woman of anti-theistic views,
have FAR more respect (to give just one example)
for an Arab who is an Apostate (Muslim) living in an Islamic country,
(where his Apostasy could cost him his life)
than I do for many of the most middling, well-meaning, white, english-speaking North American Christians.

Here's something that is also a bit crazy-making, for me:

Many "anti-LGBT" people have objected to being termed "homophobic"
saying that a Phobia is an "irrational fear of something"
and that they are not "afraid of" the LGBT community,
rather they finds homosexuality objectionable because they deem it unnatural or ungodly;

but all the arguments I've heard made, opposing LGBT rights are laughable and entirely without merit;

Homophobia IS a phobia...a fear, perhaps not of gay people,
but more likely their own latent homosexuality...ludicrously dressed up as something legitimate.

But I AM afraid of Islam.  I'm afraid of ALL religion.

And, unlike Homophobia, it is not without reason; it is not "an irrational fear".

There is a mountain of highly-demonstrable facts that support my entirely rational fear of Religion.

And here's the really crazy part:

I am confident that many of these supposedly "liberal-minded" people, supporting this "Anti-Islamophobia" bill
are, themselves, quietly homophobic....and their reason is, in many cases, due to their religion.

Just wanted to get this off my chest.

My support of this bill definitely depends on how they define "Islamophobia". If all it comes down to is protecting Muslims from discrimination, then I am all for it. If it goes into anything like stopping people from speaking out against the religion, then I am 100% against this. The specifics matter, and I don't think anyone ever pays attention to those when passing these bills.

I'll look into this, but I'd welcome anyone else to dig up the details on this if I can't find it first.

Islam is just as false as all the Abrahamic shit we have to deal with. Don't think they deserve any particular protection from the truth regarding their specious and bogus claims to being specifically favored by Allah.
 The granting of a pardon is an imputation of guilt, and the acceptance a confession of it.

Agreed, Vorlon....I especially like that you mentioned "particular protection" because that's what this bill is.

Canada, and the Province of Ontario, already have plenty of legislation against hate speech and hate crimes.

Why do Muslims need a special and specific bill?

Insert jew into all the anti islamic comments and you might get what this is aiming at. It's got nothing to do with religion but everything with broad brushing an entire group just for belonging to that group.

I think that should be obvious, given what happens for quite some time now.

Well said MTL.
Islamophobia is a term that shouldn't exist. As is antisemitism...
This is just more convenient persecution complex bullshit...

Each person should be judged on their own merit, no one should give a shit what religion you identify with or where you put your dick. Our CEO of Australia Post here is a Muslim on over 5 million a year of tax payers money. The highest paid public servent in the country. Now he's getting the arse because of non performance after 5 years, and the Islamophobia whispers have started! The mind boggles...
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

100% Disagree.

This is a blanket comment that lumps racists  in with critics.

Lots of groups do things that merit criticism.

And it has everything to do with religion.

I mentioned above that I don't like religion, as a rule;
and I gave my reason why;

I also went on to acknowledge that the rules of some groups are demonstrably more noxious
than the rules of other groups.

I don't find the rules of Sikhism or Hinduism or Buddhism draw as much fire to themselves
as the rules of Sharia, for example.

You don't hear of many International Fatwas being put out by Buddhists, after all.

I acknowledged that Judaism does not seek to recruit,
the way Islam and Christianity do,
and that is one of my biggest beefs with those religions,
especially given that they seek to recruit into a religion with plenty of other malignant ideas.

It is NOT a simple case of "othering", abaris.

LOTS of Trump supporters in the States are also Anti-Black Lives Matter, Anti-LGBTQ, Anti-Feminism, "Pro-Life" (anti-abortion), and against any number of other groups...because they rabidly engage in "othering".

I find their POV mindless, hypocritical, and indefensible.

And I have to agree that their Islamophobia is mostly fear-fuelled racism;

However,

It is dangerous to make it simply politically incorrect...or worse, illegal...to specifically criticize a group...

(or to criticize a specific motion to pass a bill specifically protecting that group,
when such blanket protections already exist)

...because if you DO criticize that group, you will simply have a label slapped onto you that you must be a racist,
or you must be a Trump supporter...when your reasons are very different.

Would love to see the the actual bill wording. I've got a big problem with "Islamophobia" without definitions, and what qualifies and a phobic act. Especially when it comes to penalties and enforcement.

Singling out a specific religion is ridiculous.

No, it's not. Going by what is happeniing these last few years. Especially when peope mix up religion with broad brushing an entire group. Similar to antisemitism.

So tell me, what qualifies as an antisemitic protection bill/law? Don't take things out of context.
