Yes! I love the original stories. Detective fiction in general is a good way to learn close reading. The answer is played out for the reader. We just have to be sharp enough to play along.
The Moonstone, Murders in the Rue Morgue, Doyle, Haskett, Hammett... I like books, too.
I try to teach my new hires how to craft the narrative of what they're working on. "tell me the story of this verification study.... what is the big picture validation story.... how does this study support marketing claims..." We as writers of technical documents have the power to tell the story. Some get it, some wash out.
