As of today 491 have been killed outright as of May 29th.  That's 3.2 per day or, as some around here would assert, magnificent police work. 

It is a national disgrace but then, we have so many of those.

That's about what I would expect in any country that was loaded up with handguns and a crazy gun culture like the US has. I don't think there is anything especially evil about your police. Dump millions of handguns into any big city anywhere and watch the murder rate and cop shootings soar to US levels. 

I'm pretty sure I saw somewhere that not only do US cops kill far more people than their peer nations, but the cops themselves are also killed a lot more than in other countries. To me it appears that the US doesn't so much have a problem with cops, it has a problem with gun culture and the deadly violence that goes with it.

You'll never take away people's right to own guns.

Not in the US, anyway.

Seemingly we may never get common sense gun reform either, until we get the money out of the system. The NRA has a choke hold on any attempts to keep anyone from owning a gun. Even mentally unstable people, or people on the terror watch list.

We could pass common sense gun laws. Most liberals don't want to take guns away all together. My clients father inlaw, (racist trump supporter) went to the Gunshow in San Diego not too long ago. He purchased all the parts of  a machine gun. They sent him to a place nearby where it was assembled. He came into her home with this war weapon that took him about an hour of shopping time and no background check. This is an insane amount of access to guns. Unless your clients father in law passed a very strict background,has a stamp, and payed the tax......his possession of that machine gun is already illegal.  So was it;s sale, either in whole or in pieces..to him.  

The other possibility, is that your clients father in law didn't actually purchase a machine gun, in part or in whole.

According to our common sense gun law, you can't purchase a gun without a background check unless it's a peer to peer sale. Gun shows don't qualify for that loophole. Retail stores like walmart don't qualify, Gun manufacturers don't qualify.
According to our common sense gun laws, crazy can't buy a gun.
According to our common sense gun laws, guns and their ammo must be safely stored.

Breaching any of the above (as purchaser or seller) is a felony.. States also have additional crimes and regulations. So do counties. Cities, particular neighborhoods...and specific buildings - yet more gun laws. It's not that we don't have good, common sense gun laws...we have a mountain of them. People don't follow them. Institutionally, we lack both the will and the funding to uniformly enforce them. It's a vicious cycle, our unwillingness or inability emboldens and normalizes the actions of those who break those laws to begin with. The ATF isn't going to catch them. It doesn't -wan't- to poke every hornets nest, and couldn't afford to if it wanted to. That leaves the onus on the locals..who -sometimes- use confiscations as a way to generate revenue...but they're similarly limited.

I had no idea those laws were already in place! America needs to open its eyes to gun violence. There was a beautiful video trending on social media of a little black boy saying please stop killing people. His cousin was shot waiting outside of school. He said I'm 5 or 6 and I shouldn't know about this stuff. I encourage people to watch it and learn what we our doing to our children with gun violence.

We need to open our eyes to depression and suicide. We talk about gun violence constantly, we write legislation to combat it...but, like with the notion of needing regulations before....there's a subtle misapprehension rolling around in our heads as to what we're talking about.  We hear that ten people died today from guns, for example..and we imagine ten shootouts, ten crimes, ten children finding daddy's pistol.  It's actually six suicides. Most people who die of gunshot wounds aren't the victim of a violent crime, and didn't have an accident.

The trouble, ofc, is that even though crazy can't buy a gun (i know, I know, it's unkind to describe the suicidal as crazy).....they probably -weren't- crazy when they bought the gun, or...at the very least, didn't have access to or hadn't availed themselves -of- the mental health services that would have flagged them.
