Anti-Theism

Anti-Theism
I sort of get Agnosticism, Agnostic Atheism and Atheism. Although, there is a blur, they do all start with "A" Smile It seems to me that Atheism is as diverse as Christianity. Christianity has it's 5 major idiot clowns; Tertullian; Origen; Augustine; Martin Luther; John Calvin.

I'm quite sure Atheism also has it's clowns. I mean, Carl Sagan...really?

What I don't understand is the anti-theism among Atheists. If there is no Deity then, why bash what you don't believe even exists?

Yet, I fully understand anti-Christianity. I am a Christian but, those five clowns followers call me a heretic!

As Min has already said...irrespective of whether or not we believe, others do, and they act upon those beliefs.  Anti-theists would be mal-theists if there were a god.  To sum it up, we think that the very -idea- is shitty, regardless.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Have you considered that anti-theism may be as diverse as any given label?  IMO, if you are willing, perhaps the community here could clear up any misconceptions/misunderstandings that you may have, sir.

There are a bunch of reasons.

1) Religion has some negative consequences on the world.  So if the atheist is a humanist, and sees people getting harmed because of something, they probably will dislike that something.  Like a person back during the spanish inquisition might be mad at Catholicism because their kid got cut in half.

2) Atheism is culturally hip.  People like to shit on the squares.  Religious folk are now the squares.  It's just a sociological thing.  Look how smart I am! Watch me give the dumb theist a wedgie.  See how smart I am for not being a dumb theist!  I is one of the smart people and defunutly not is dum!

3) There's definitely an us against them aspect.  People stereotype.  A few theists told a few atheists they were going to hell.  Some atheists hold all the theists responsible for it.

I'm sure there are plenty more reasons for different people.

Do you consider yourself an anti-theist? If so, I'm curious as to what constitutes anti-theism in your view. As a regular ol' run of the mill atheist, I think that the very -idea- is shitty, thou if God did turn out to exist, I guess I'd have to be a theist, unless he was a malevolent god or something.

But then again, we all know that everyone is pretty much fucked in the "malevolent god" scenario...

I, too, would be curious to hear about anti-theism from those who adopt the view. Not due to any misconceptions, per se, but I don't know very much about anti-theism or what diversities exist within it.

I should also add that many Christians are "anti-atheist" but they don't seem to feel the need to categorize themselves as such; maybe they should.

RE: Anti-Theism
I lack the necessary fucks to be an anti-theist.  People can believe almost anything they've been trained to believe.  Not my job to talk them out of it and, whether or not they are actually qualified, my policy is to treat adults as adults.  It's their life, they make the calls.  (Of course if that leads to trespassing on my lifestyle choices, that's another story.)

Besides I remain curious as to why the god hole seems so compelling to so many.  I'm not jealous, just curious.  I'm more eager to understand it than to stamp it out.  Doesn't mean I'll be tolerant to condescending apologists or over-eager missionaries.  Those who get all up in my grill will be swatted.  But until then I'm just gonna do me and let them do them.

I don't entirely get anti-theism either.  I think it comes from thinking it is all a scheme hatched by slimeballs to extract tithes and ruin people's Sundays.  I'm inclined to think there is no clandestine mob bosses running religion as a racket.  While some may lose their way, I suspect those higher up are acting on the same koolaid as they're passing out to everyone else.

LOL, no...though that very often is how it gets used.

It's about recognizing that filling the "god hole" leads inexorably to misery.  Hitchens had a great line, summing it up.

Quote:There still remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum of servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking.
No terrible thing some person does from the basis of their faith surprises me in the least. They are -always- internally logical outgrowths of their beliefs, and their beliefs are inherently dangerous. In the crushing majority of cases of people doing fucked up shit, we look for "what went wrong" with that person; with theistic faith...it's more often a case of what went "right". The man in the sky brings out the worst in his followers.

Hey, one man's misery is another man's ecstasy apparently. They don't have to like my cup of tea and I sure as hell am not having what they like.
