So if he said that about spherical Earth would you not agree with him? Let me re-work the sentence "Anyone who doesn't believe in spherical Earth is either ignorant, stupid, insane or wicked." - Richard Dawkins I bet you would agree with him, so why is biological evolution any different?
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
Let me try reworking the sentence:
"Anyone who doesn't believe in evolution is either wicked ignorant, wicked stupid, or wicked insane!"
God thinks it's fun to confuse primates. Larsen's God!

I don’t really care if Dawkins is an asshole. He’s intelligent and he arrives at reasonable conclusions about god claims based on evidence and logic. Whether or not he’s a jerk is totally irrelevant to the subject matter he speaks on. IMO.

It matters to me, personally. Someone can speak the truth all they want (or at least what we believe to be the truth), and put forth good arguments for it. But if you're an ass hole to people, you've lost me. It's like if a Catholic theologian came in here and was a condecending jerk to everyone. I may agree with his arguments/points, but I'm not going to like him or support him or want him representing me/my beliefs in any way.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I would agree, in that being an asshole does often seem to be a pre-cursor to encouraging/engaging in hideous, assholish behavior and supporting hideous, assholish ideas.
Despite one's wealth of knowledge and/or academic pedigree. So unless said asshole's wealth of knowledge happens to include invaluable, pertinent shit that NONE of the world's other brilliant folk are privy to or are willing to share, then to hell with him. RE: Angry, condescending atheists

I’m just saying it doesn’t matter to me, personally. I can understand how him being a cunt toward theists would justifiably be a turn off to theists, and he’s not likely to change anyone’s mind with that kind of strategy, but I’m not going to, say, refuse to read one of his books on evolution simply because he’s a jerk to Christians. I don’t consider him as representing me in any way. I don’t need representation for not believing in god.

Yes, but you can call me Valkyrie, it's easier. Playing Cluedo with my mum while I was at Uni: "You did WHAT? With WHO? WHERE???" |
