Zero chomped on the bee then pranced off. A few minutes later he started stumbling so we turned for home. Within another minute he laid down in the middle of the road and refused to get up. I was about in hysterical meltdown so Tony picked him up and carried him a block but he had to put him down. I ended up sitting next to him while Tony went home for the truck. We got home and Tony happened to have something similar to benadryl in shot form. We gave him that and it knocked him out. He woke up swollen like that but happy and playful. He was fine within a few hours. It took me another day to calm down enough to leave him. Fender is quite a bit older than Zero and she has been there much longer so she gets to be alpha. Not to mention Zero doesn't give a fuck about being alpha and he only gets upset when she cuddles me and won't let him on the couch.

That was the situation we had with our second Korean dog, Jessica. They skipped the first two months of Heartguard and went right to the Immiticide. We had them double check with the microscope for microfilaria and they weren't there.... yet.How was she diagnosed? Antigen test? That test detects products of the female worm. Yes, but. And the but comes in because of the previously mentioned Valley Fever issue which also uses an antigen test. After some weird test results - VF can be fatal - we started investigating the tests. Finding stuff like this does not do much to reassure us. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4336501/ Quote:False negative antigen tests in dogs infected with heartworm and placed on macrocyclic lactone preventives Quote:Together, these data indicate that antigen tests may not be a reliable indicator of heartworm antigen status in D. immitis-infected dogs managed with SK; over half the dogs which converted to antigen negative were actually still antigen positive following treatment of serum to disrupt immune complexes. I've seen studies where some vets only consider antigen tests 70% reliable. Troubling. RE: Pet Photos thread where too much is never enough.

(and we're also trying to get people to quit practicing the "slow kill" method, but that's a different story). Ivermectin ( Heartguard, etc) works fine as a preventative by killing any of the larvae that it finds but it is best used on a monthly basis so gaps do not occur in the regimen which might allow larvae to hatch. Again in places where mosquitos are ubiquitous it is a must for any responsible dog owner. But I've never heard any vet suggest not using Immiticide to kill any adult worms already present. The ones that are there will continue to grow and sooner or later there will be problems. Ivermectin also has the added benefit of killing various intestinal parasites a dog may pick up like roundworms and hookworms. Again, in humid areas where mosquitos are common, so are those parasites. The biggest problem with Immiticide is the need to keep the dog quiet for two months after completion of the injections so that the dead worms do not break off and head for the lungs where they can cause a pulmonary embolism and therefore a dead dog. It is not even a particularly expensive treatment but a lot of people don't want to deal with the idea of having to keep a dog quiet for that long. What can I say. Some people are idiots. |
