I think it is stated quite well in the quote you pulled from this article. They see Trump as someone who could bring on a Christian like nation. They have similar thinking that ISIS does with the Caliphate. Makes you wonder really what is so different between Evangelicals and ISIS.

Honestly, the problem isn't even that he was unfaithful to his wife. If Melania doesn't care, I don't. The problem is that he threatened Stormy Daniels. And that's a HUGE issue.
Then again, for our evangelical friends... they don't care that he defrauded thousands of people with Trump University. Of course not, they LOVE con artists. Which is why they keep electing them.

I think that they might have missed something utterly basic in their attempt to dignify this continued support by way of ideology, though. That he cheated on his hot young wife bareback with pornstars and playmates doesn't make the man repulsive to them, in truth..it makes them want to be him. It adds to the myth of his celebrity, and it's that myth that's always been compelling to them - even if other myths are equally compelling. Like the myth that this is a fundamentally christian nation, or the myth that the trumpster ever could (or even -would-) make it so.
Pretty much anyone who thinks morality depends on the existence of a god is pretty much intrinsically indifferent to immoral behavior, apart from making it right with God after the fact with sufficient appeasement leading to forgiveness. Actually behaving morally is not as important as admitting you're a sinner. Kind of gives the green light to Trump's sort of behavior. Definitely a selling point for certain kind of xtian.
