(April 19, 2018 at 10:10 am)Neo-Scholastic Wrote: I never said that people are not entitled to their opinions. Nor did I say people who think they are hot are wrong. I explicitly said that people who enjoy them should enjoy them. Also I did not say that adults shouldn't get tattoos if they really want too. It's a free country. The OP invites everyone to share their opinion.

The question on the table is whether or not tattoos are hot or unattractive. In my judgement, they are unattractive and implied that IMO visible tattos are unprofessional. That's all I'm saying and yes I do have opinions about people with tattoos that may or may not be justified. But those who say that tattoos are hot are also making a judgement and they also have opinions about the attitudes of those who sport tattoos that may or may not be justified. Everyone who has an opinion, either positive or negative, or depends on the tat are making judgments. A person making a positive judgement is every bit as judgmental as someone making a negative one.

I don't much care for modern art either. And I also believe that people who do appreciate the art not for the art itself but rather only for the narrative context surrounding the art. And I have negative opinions about the suspected motives of many contemporary art scene. Similarly with tattoos I feel that they do not rise to the level of art, as many believe that they do, and that the popularity of a tattoos has more to due with the narratives about them rather than the images themselves. That much is implicit in the question of whether they are "hot" - in at least some instances tattoos seem to signal attitudes about the person's sexual attitudes (hence the pejorative "tramp stamp") and not mere ornamentation.

Again we were pointing out that there was "disrespect" toward our own bodies and no you didn't say visible tattoos you just said you like to look well groomed and professional which leads the reader to assume you mean that those with tattoos are not well groomed or professional. If you had said visible and unprofessional I would have actually agreed with you.

Personally, I don't care too much about what other people think about my appearance either. Then again I don't try make my appearance a stand-out feature. I try to stay well-groomed and dress professionally to match the setting. IMHO people who make the effort to overtly express their individuality by means of their outward appearance shouldn't be too surprised that not everyone shares their opinion about the propriety of such displays.
Holy hell that's tone deaf.

Shrug. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Were the idea one can't be clean cut and tattooed i'll never know .

I don't think anyone is saying that. Obviously you can have ink on your body and still portray a clean cut image. But in order to do that, you need to cover that shit up.

Perhaps I did not say what I meant in the most artful way. I believe tattoos are not a respectful way to treat one's body. That doesn't mean that individuals, such as yourself, do not respect your body but rather have a different opinion about how one goes about doing so.

I apologize for using wording that could be interpreted that way. In reference to myself there are no tattoos to display so I didn't need wording to suggest I had something I'd want to hide. I was merely stating the standards to which I hold myself and the presumption that most people, like me, want to be seen as well-groomed, in the sense of not having attention seeking juvenile hair-cuts, and professional, in the sense of being well-dressed within generally accepted normative styles, etc.

All that said, I am a product of my generation. Attitudes do seem to be changing. When I first started working, it was suit and tie. Then in the 90's we had casual Friday's, which meant polo shirt and khakis. Eventually "corporate casual" was the norm. Now I see the kids coming into work with t-shirts, yoga pants, nose rings, and tats in full view. In my mind something's been lost in our culture - class. No one dresses up any more.

Thank you for clarifying. As I said I work in a bank and I agree that things are getting lax. One of my male tellers is constantly being told to shape up. The other one comes in as a helper on certain days but he is always in a full suit, if not the jacket but that's acceptable in Texas, and is a good contrast to my lazy one. The lazy one comes in with his long hair down like a female (I don't mind his long hair but it should be pulled back in a clean look) a beard that goes down his throat, a chain connected to his wallet, and pants that show his underwear....

That is an opinion.

Correct, it is an opinion. It is an opinion which is based on the fact that many employers have policies which forbid visible tattoos. Even more have policies which require any visible tattoos to be non-offensive. So yeah, depending on the circumstances, if you want to portray a clean cut image, you need to cover that shit up. And that's a fact Jack.

Yeah, opinion on tattoos is definitely evolving. In workplaces dominated by young people (look at Silicon Valley as an example) tattoos are not taboo. The dress code is lax as well. More and more people are realizing that giving workers greater freedoms does not at all impact the quality of their work, and there's no reason to judge a book by its cover. If somebody can do their job well, that's all that really matters. My workplace here in DC is very traditional, especially since we're an association that routinely works with people on Capitol Hill. But there are so many tech start-ups, think tanks, and other types of workplaces dominated by 20-somethings and 30-somethings that really don't care.

To be honest, I can only think of 2 or 3 of my friends who DON'T have any tattoos. I would love to have one, but because of my low immune system there is a high chance of infection and I don't really want to risk it right now.
