Mormon girl "comes out" at church

RE: Mormon girl "comes out" at church
Honestly im not sure why her parents would have let her do that in church. She could have given a presentation about it elsewhere. I'm not sure why she would have picked the church when the church specifically teaches that acting on homosexual urges is immoral. It wasnt a very appropriate place to go up there and give a speech that directly contradicts a fundamental teaching.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

CL that is not the point. This is like saying to a rape victim, "Why would the prosecuting lawyer put the victim on the stand?"

Instead of blaming the girl or the family for supporting her, maybe the blame should be on that church for their bullshit religious based bigotry.

Yes it was very appropriate and brave, on the girl's part and the parent's part.

I would only say now that it is done, if the Church chooses to continue to be dicks to that family then I would simply leave that church and take my business elsewhere. But no, neither that girl or the parents owe that church any submission or silence. The religious based bigotry of that church is not their baggage and that family does not owe them any silence or blind loyalty.

Quote:There was no poll. This was intended to be satirical, but appears to have missed its mark in many places.

It was originally posted on a Facebook page for the The Atheist Advocate.

In response to complaints, the poster writes:

"The original meme is a caricature, based on the fact that many conservative Christians think about homosexuals in a negative way. The statistics are exaggerated, much in the same way a caricature of a portrait is an exaggeration of one's facial features."

Did a survey of conservative Christians show 85% would disown their child if they turned out to be homo sapiens?

I fail to see the humor in a young girl being brave and coming out. It isn't funny because for every one person who comes forward to say they are gay, there are countless others who can't.

As for the 12 year old this occasion, sounds like she has her shit together, and that is a great arrow to have in one's quiver when subjected to Mormon piffle, dreck, folderol, crapola and perfidy.

Is twelve too young to know for sure?
I genuinely have no idea, this is not supposed to be judgemental.
By 10 I was very attracted to a female classmate of mine. By 11 I had a hard on that embarrassed me in public at times. I was jerking off by then thinking about girls I knew. I don't think 12 is too young to know who your attracted to.

Maybe she did it at church in recognition that most homophobic bigotry has it's roots in one religion or another.

Perhaps it's time that backwards, outdated, judgemental and yet, fundamental teaching gets re-thought if not outright discarded.
