Battle of Vukovar
#21
RE: Battle of Vukovar
Damn, did a little research and this is one stupid conspiracy theory. This is a battle that involved thousands of people and destroyed a whole city, all less than 30 years ago.

What evidence are you looking for exactly? Like, what do you need to be shown to prove it's real?

For data on how many tons of uo have so far been recovered , estimates for how much remians, the cost to clear it, and the projected timetable, try the mine action centers of serbia and croatia.
Do you have an explanation how I don't know that? I've studied quite a bit of Croatian history, and me not knowing something like that would require an explanation.

You would be better positioned than I to answer that question, don;t you think?

I am a Croatian 18-year-old from Donji Miholjac (not very far from Vukovar), and I can't help but wonder how it's possible that it left so little evidence (at least as far as I am aware), when more than three thousand people were supposedly killed there.

I have studied quite a bit of Croatian history. I had to do that not only for school, but also for my interpretation of the Croatian toponyms:
Croatian Toponyms
If there is evidence to justify such an extraordinary claim of Vukovar being burned to the ground and rebuilt again completely in, well, a decade, how it is that I don't know anything about that evidence?

As an atheist, how will I justify my disbelief in the Jesus's resurrection if I believe that the Battle of Vukovar happened? One of the reasons other atheists usually give for their disbelief in Jesus's resurrection is that our understanding of history has to be in line with our understanding of how the universe works. However, the Battle of Vukovar is also not in line with my understanding of how the universe works, because I have won the school physics competition two years in a row and I still have no bright idea how the bombs might work.

I know at least one person who was there around that time, I suppose I could ask them.

Why would saying that Vukuvar never happened be a conspiracy theory? Why wouldn't saying Vukovar did happen be called a conspiracy theory? The massacre of Vukovar having happened would require a large number of people colluding in a giant plot to do that. Why would they do that? How would they do that? I don't see it. Show me some reasonable explanation.

Here is a UK documentary on the battle that has explanations to the build up, troop disposition and footage of the fighting and atrocities.

Saying the battle did not happen requires explaining the presence of a common belief that it did happen, the most likely explanation being a conspiracy of people fostering the impression that it did happen. Saying the battle did occur explains away the presence of a large number of people believing it did happen by explaining that it did in fact happen, not by positing a conspiracy of people working to make the belief that it happened occur.

IDK whether or not this hits your bar for reasonable....but the why, was in service to ethnic cleansing.  The how is the usual how.  Shit that goes boom, and a pogrom.

And what is the simplest explanation for the common belief that Jesus rose from the dead? Is it also a massive conspiracy? Or is it that some stories get popular among ignorant people? If it is that some stories get popular among ignorant people, why would it be different for the Battle of Vukovar?

What is "ethnic cleansing"?

By the way, does anyone have an idea what the name "Vukovar" means? I have been thinking about that for quite a while, I think that it means "the city of moisture", that "Vuk-" comes from the zeroth grade of the Indo-European root *welk (moisture). The syllabic 'l' regularly turned to 'u' in Old Croatian (compare, for example, late Old Church Slavonic "слньце" and modern Croatian "sunce").
