Unfortunately we are a tribal species. I wish my species were not, but we are. We do unfortunately need protection. I sincerely value our military, not that I agree with every war America has been involved in. I would say I hate the attitude that service is about tribalism or revenge. Ike understood what assholes like Hitler did not. Ike understood that while a military was necessary, it was not something to be glorified like the global dominate mentality of Hitler or ancient Rome.

Ike was a hypocrite because he never 'saw' war - he saw the aftermath, certainly, but he had zero actual combat experience.  And I don't believe for a moment that he 'hated' war.
